This is also why a lot of Disney live action remakes failed at. They don't capture the essence and magic at what makes the animated original great

When Nathan came out of his mom's belly, his mom apparently told him: “You're gonna be a classic, son.”

I love that you talk about how you've shifted into this perspective over time, I'm the same way. I used to like "realism" above all else. And nothing could touch an amazing PLOT twist. But the more I've watched the more you kind of realize that a lot of stories are the same thing rehashed. That there are only so many unique things you can do with plot. And that while a twist is cool the first time, it's not what makes me come back to a movie again and again. You know what does hit? A movie's VIBE. The vibrations a movie or show are putting off is why I fall in love with something. And I don't get why more people don't feel this way about movies. Everybody is fine with interacting with MUSIC on that level. Very few people are like "yeah these lyrics don't really tell a logical story." Art is vibes. Movies can be art. Story matters but IMAGE and FEELING are just as powerful. You hit the nail on the head style = substance or to put it differently form can matter just as much (if not more) than content. You reference the Cinema Sins way of thinking, and not to heap too much blame on them, but I really do think that way of looking at movies even if it was mostly in jest, really raised a generation of movie lovers who only know how to engage with the art of film in a certain way. We gotta open our minds. Thanks for helping to perpetrate this based take.

As a teenager I was obsessed with Twilight (like so many girls). But looking back it wasn't the shirtless vampires or were-wolfs that made me rewatch the movie again and again, it was the vibe. Much has already been said about the blueish filter that colours the movie, but I also think the setting, music and styling heavily contributed to why so many people wanted to be part of that world and even now still feel an attachment to it.

I feel like too many people get so caught up in finding out every little “cool” little plot thing that exists. When it’s just fun to enjoy the vibes for sure

The Batman is the first live action Batman movie that has truly captured how depressing and beaten down it must feel to live in Gotham. Like we are always told how bad things are, but this is the first movie where it hits you in the mouth with the hopelessness that is living in Gotham.

Plot = Good movie
Vibes = Great movie
Both = Masterpiece

Definitely Ghibli movies. Many of them have great characters and stories, but even some of the less intense ones like My Neighbour Totoro get you with vibes alone. Got to love their music and aesthetics!

Dunkirk is a prime example of this. It has a basic plot, no character development, no arcs, no twists, it's just experiencing this big event from multiple angles, and it's breathtaking

Prince of Egypt is so perfect for this. The animation style, the music, and even the animated cinematography just capture you so much. One of the most underrated movies ever.

A good film/director that really encapsulates "don't try to UNDERSTAND it, FEEL it" is anything by Wes Anderson.
Everything from the colour coordination and soundtrack, to the set design and the movement of the camera is crafted for you to feel the film, to be engrossed in the world. Understanding the plot and what is happening to the characters often plays second fiddle, the in-universe world building is the main focus.

Scott pilgrim vs the world i’ve often said has a style so insane that even if it was terribly written it would still be awesome!

Controversial opinion: Studio Ghibli films are all about vibes: the stories - while unique - are just okay most of the time. I mean, just look at Miyazaki's storyboarding process and you get the feel that he's just drawing whatever he's vibing with at the time. And Takahata consistently would miss deadlines because he wasn't feeling the film was working for him just yet (just look at Princess Kaguya's whole production process).

For the record, I love Ghibli films (Spirited Away is what inspired me to go into animation), but the reason they're so popular is because of the anemoia vibes they provide - not because the stories themselves are all that special (apart from a select few).

Neon Genesis Evangelion I think is a great example. The show “makes you feel depression.” But no seriously a lot of people get mad at how convoluted the plot is (which it is), but the director was in a deep state of depression when creating the show and the way that each character encapsulates what it feels like to be struggling with depression is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s super powerful

My favorite movie of all time is like this.

Kingsman: The Secret Service was made by the director to be fun, where the spy movies of the time were serious and dark. I love it so much that I can’t see plot holes, but if there are, I don’t care. It’s fun, and also has heart, something I can’t say for the other movies in that franchise.

Thank god someone else feels this way. I'm so tired of how over analytical everyone has become recently and how people always try to judge if a movie/show/song is "objectively" good or bad, you can't just like something for the sake of liking it anymore

Nacho libre vibes go hard. The cinematography, music, and background actors all gave me a depressing yet optimistic feeling, and I love it.
