for me its a solid 9.0, daveeds delivery works so well on this album and their production is at full fronts here. everything worked out so well as they centered around a gorey halloween theme. love this stuff

You've really grown, both as a content creator and a music critique, your reviews are amazing, describing a good chunk of the music itself while giving your take on it, good job Shawn, proud of you

Favourite album of the year for me. I completely disagree about the lack replay value thing. I've already listened to the album about 15 times because every song keeps drawing me back

I believe the lack of self reference on the album creates a very unique musical experience in a land of “I”, and “me.”

Didn't top the genius that was Splendor and Misery but I really enjoyed this album. Daveed might be slowly becoming one of my favourite lyricists.

When an album let alone a single song has you musing about its potential meaning, regardless of how pretentious you may feel when expressing what it makes you experience, makes that track nothing short of art.
All from simply setting a piano literally on fire.
Also: My jaw has been on the floor each time I listen to this album since it was pre released on Sub Pop. The layers to take away from it are just mind candy.

I’m unfamiliar with your content, I found this video looking for music analysis of an album I love.

But just from this video, you have a great writing voice. It’s clear and insightful without getting bogged down in the deeper ideas you very obviously could talk at length about. Excellent analysis, a great grasp/concept of rap and it’s strengths as a medium, better than any reviewer I can think of off hand.

It’s so refreshing to hear someone take rap seriously as a literary/musical form of expression. Even if I have slight disagreements on interpretation, it’s great to hear someone with (significantly) more insight into this part of the music world take such an artful/respectful approach.

I approach my music analysis from a classical/communications point of view, and your analysis resonated deeply with me, and it showed me things that I have overlooked for years.

Well done, I hope the rest of your videos are as good as this one!

I feel like Daveed using 2nd person instead of 1st or 3rd brute force makes you the subject of the story rather than you being the observer. It's so effective. The song Run For Your Life made me so anxious because of how immersive it is.

You should watch the film Ganja and Hess, which is sampled in Blood of the Fang. It definitely added something to my understanding of the album, though it's hard to say exactly what. It's not like the album is based on the film or anything, but the themes from it seem to be mirrored in the album (a lust for blood being the incredibly obvious one). For example, on All in Your Head there's the section that Counterfeit Madison sings which includes a section that's close to the lord's prayer; 'Lead us away from every temptation, Lord
Deliver us from Heaven'. There's a part near the end of Ganja and Hess where Hess, who is a vampire, goes to a church to try and gain redemption from the life he's lived, the theme of redemption being pretty clear in those lines included in All in Your Head. Dunno if I'm just making connections where there are none, but it's interesting at least.
