Steps 1, 2, and 3 To Help You Navigate Unfamiliar Territory
NOTICE AND NAMING
The first step in this practice is to name and notice the experience that is causing us distress. By doing so, we create a space between ourselves and our experiences. We become aware of the thoughts and emotions that arise, and by acknowledging them, we can allow them to pass without being caught up in them.
ALL THOUGHTS ARE JUST THOUGHTS
The second step is to treat all thoughts and emotions as just thoughts and emotions, without giving them too much importance or getting attached to them. Whether it's a simple thought like forgetting to pick up dinner or a more significant one like losing a job during the pandemic, all thoughts are just temporary mental events that come and go.
NOTICES THE ONE WHO NOTICES
The final step involves noticing the one who notices us. By becoming aware of the part of ourselves that is witnessing our experiences, we can cultivate a sense of clarity and compassion toward ourselves. This witnessing awareness is not caught up in our thoughts and emotions but is simply observing them from a place of stillness and peace.
With practice, this inner awareness can become more familiar and provide us with a sense of relief and comfort when we are faced with difficult experiences.
Meditation practice offers a powerful tool for navigating through challenging situations. By turning inward and finding a place of peace within ourselves, we can cultivate a sense of resilience and strength that can help us face whatever life throws our way.
