56k modems came in the late 90's. In 1985 you had 2400 bps and it cost $549, 00, so the most common were 300 and some 1200 bps. I always called NPCs non-player characters. MOB was monster object, I modified and hosted some MUDs back in the day at my university. =) Awesome documentary, I'm watching all of them!

Today I learned where the term "mob" comes from. Even 15 years ago I remember people arguing whether it was Everquest or some other mmo from that time that coined the term. I wonder how many people get that one wrong today?

I'm somewhat surprised you didn't mention MUD1, the game where both the terms "MUD" and "MOB" actually came from - which was connected to ARPANET in 1980. Beyond that, Raph Koster, the main designer of Ultima Online, ran a MUD. And Brad was a huge fan of, and regularly played, SojournMUD. At one point, people even accused Verant of copying DikuMUD code for Everquest.
