What's the last book you've bought?

The Anomaly by Hervé Le Tellier was originally published in French and won the Goncourt Prize last year and the Booktube Prize's Fiction Prize this year and, having read it, I can see it being a book you might like if you've not read it yet: it's about a plane that takes off in March, hits turbulence and then lands normally... Only three months later the exact same plane, carrying the exact same passengers (all 200+ of them) lands again, the only point of difference between the two flights being that the later landing one had experienced even worse turbulence than the 'original' flight did. The novel then follows what happens when the As and Bs of these people have to deal with the fact that the As lived March to June as normal and made all kinds of life decisions - ending and starting relationships, career choices etc - or even died in that time (in at least one case) but for the Bs they've landed feeling exactly as they did in March and have different ideas about what should have happened because they can see how those choices played out or didn't experience X happening a week after the flight landed in March etc. Plus there's no easy way to divide one life between two versions of the same person or deal with a person who died in those three months suddenly being alive again...

The memory police was the book which took me out of a 3 year long reading slump. I loved it and ever since I´m back at reading a little bit every day. I hope you enjoy it!

The Memory Police was so interesting. I feel like it said a lot about peoples attachment to material goods. You’re in the mind of someone whose memories disappear with the objects, but she knows people that don’t forget so she has this juxtaposition of both perspectives.

I love your book page idea for I'm stealing that idea😅

You can also bake the book pages in the oven, BUT they get really crispy and sometimes catch fire, so I don't suggest it. Tea gives more of a yellow color (depending on the blend) and coffee gives a brownish tint.

Yes! Coffee stain the pages, it's super easy!

Latest book acquired is "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, " written by Winifred Watson in 1938.

Attachment issues absolutely impact all kinds of relationships. I've seen students interact with each other and me as their teacher, and you can see who has safe, stable attachment.

The Family Game sounds great, it's on my TBR as well. It sounds like the premiss of the movie "Ready or not" which was fantastic!

Yes Les fourmis is amazing!!! I read the three books in french at least 10 years ago and I absolutely loved them! Children of Time reminded me so much of this series. I’m sure you’ll like it too!

Soul of an octopus is one of my faves! You will love it. It reads like a novel rather than a non fiction. And the prose is so eloquent.

I read a very similar sounding book re octopi called “other minds” by peter godfrey-smith, and that was very good. Mostly it was looking at how their minds work and evolved.

I am also waiting to read Apollo Murders (I have it on hold at the library). I read his non-fiction book, The Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, and loved it (he's Canadian, too). Also, The Soul of an Octopus is one of my favourite non-fiction books. It's a memoir with a lot of wonderful, heartwarming, funny, and sad stories. I hope you enjoy your new reads!
