The Smithsonian's Arts and Industries Building, a whimsical fortress on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., that has been vacant for nearly 20 years, is about to reopen to the public, just in time for the institution's 175th anniversary. CBS News national correspondent Chip Reid talks with the Secretary of the Smithsonian, Lonnie Bunch III; the building's director, Rachel Goslins; and architect-designer David Rockwell about the upcoming exhibition, "Futures" – and the history of a building designed to be ahead of its time.

"CBS Sunday Morning" features stories on the arts, music, nature, entertainment, sports, history, science and Americana, and highlights unique human accomplishments and achievements. Check local listings for CBS Sunday Morning broadcast times.

We were in DC last month and got to walk past this beautiful building. So many of the museums were still closed to the public but I'm grateful we were able to go through the Museum of American History. Washington DC is an amazing place.

I love this building. I live in DC, and remember when it temporarily housed the Air and Space Museum while that was being designed and built. A&I is like something out of a Victorian carnival in England, and fantastic. It’s far more architecturally interesting than its next door neighbor, the Castle, which is the hallmark of the Smithsonian and houses Administration. It also has some lovely gardens.

Edited to add: No, this building isn’t great design, and my personal esthetic runs towards contemporary architecture, but sometimes the best buildings are the ones that make our hearts happy and show their humanity. You can’t help but view Arts and Industries, inside and out, with joy and a smile.

SMITHSONIAN Magazine was housed in this building when I worked there 1980-1986. I loved exploring throughout that old building. I didn't know it had been vacant for the last 20 years. I'm sure the renovations have made it a spectacular sight!

In the early 60s there was a room in The Castle solely dedicated to WWI aviation dioramas that lined all four walls. They were marvelous.

I'm glad to see the reopening of the Art & Industries Building. I saw an exhibit there for the 100th Anniversary of the 1876 Centennial Exposition. I hope these kind of exhibits will return.

Its my favorite building at smithsonian. The collections inside were the best. It was the entire 1876 Centenial Collection. They should have never closed it and dispersed the collection the way they did. When they did that I never returned. That building and the collection was a time machine of America. Non better anywhere else. It should have been left alone forever. They ruined the Smithsonian for me when they closed its doors.
