Pattaya is an internationally known beach resort in Thailand. In the 1950s, the stretch of coast between Si Racha and Sattahip consisted of only a handful of villages. The Bay of Pattaya itself was only inhabited by a few fishing families who appreciated the calm water and the safe location. The real story of what is now Pattaya begins in the early 1960s, when there was a US Navy base in Sattahip during the Vietnam War, and the United States expanded U-Tapao Airport as a military air base. The GIs went to nearby Pattaya in their free time to relax on the clean beaches. The place soon became the "Rest and Recreation Area" of the US military. Since the 1970s, Pattaya has developed into an important tourist center in Asia within a few years.
