How To Restore A Stanley 45

I picked this up the other day and with parts from another one I have I almost have one full Stanley 45 now.

the hard thing with this is cleaning in all of the corners and nips. so I soaked all the parts in a bath of vinegar and water to soak the rust off. then with a bit of scrubbing all the rust was off and I was left with a nice Finnish.

A Stanley 45 is a wonderful tool and a lot of fun! so now I guess I can go throw out 7 of my planes!

I was given a 45 about 2 years ago with most of the blades. After doing a light derusting and sharpening the blades I used the plane to build a box to fit all of the parts. I then used it to create enough sash moldings to rebuild a 8 light window in our old house that had been broken. It is a really cool tool.

Wow! Boiled linseed oil for the wood. excellent. I just got a nice old nickle plated one with all attachments and 8 blades and cam stop for 5.00 at a yard sale. The twenty something daughter was trying to sell everything when her father was not looking. Ha! I should have said three! Watching you put a perfect groove in the two by four was eye opening. This thing is well designed. I will buy anything that is beautiful looking if the price is right. I love great industrial designed stuff from the past!

I love mine. It is missing some parts and it was collecting rust so fast here in Florida. I had to paint it so I chose Gold. It looks incredible. I have tons of blades for this and my No. 55. definitely a great shop tool.

1:34, how did you align the skates btw. Trying to figure out if its cast steel as i was going to use a mallet to get them back into alignment.

Thanks for showing how to do this, I just purchased a Stanley 45 type 5 so I am looking forward to restoring it and putting it to work.

I've been kind of binge-watching your channel lately as I've decided to try my hand a hand-tool woodworking again. While looking for all my tools, I found the parts to my partial #45 and decided to look for what I could find on it.

I'll be darned if you didn't have a video on exactly what I was needing. Go figure. :)

Please, by all means, keep it up.

Cleaned up great. One question? Did you stick the entire body with the wood handle in the solution? Only asking because I've had terrible results with wood in water and vinegar solutions in the past.

I have a Stanley 45 but there is no wooden piece on the fence and there are no screw holes to attach a piece of wood to it. Is this a different type and will it work with a fence that has no wood on it?

I have a similar plane. How would you tighten up the front knob with those oblong threads? Good job on this!

Huh... Question..did you take off the wooden handle also? I am in the process of restoring both a 45 and a 55. Unless I am missing something I can't get the handles off without breaking them?

Do you have a replacement parts recommendation for missing parts for a restoration? I am missing the screw that holds the slitter/knicker on one side and would like to find more cutters. Thanks!

I'm a plane-novice, but these have intrigued me. I'd love to delve more into all the different abilities of one of these planes.

Love the video man. Great job on the restoration... you kept mentioning the skates... what part of the plane is "the skates"?

Great video. I got my hands on two version 7. One was almost complete and was in good shape just took a wire brush to clean up some small spots on the skate, but had the incorrect fence for that version so I picked up another that had the correct fence but no blades. The fence was in good condition but the rest was not. Need to clean it up like you did. Did you soak the wooden handle overnight in the vinegar and water solution? Also the first one had the original wooden box that needs a new bottom and the lid is missing. Have you ever done any repairs to the original Stanly wooden boxes?

I'Ve bought one for 20$ at a yard sale but the fence is missing. Do you think a hard wood home made fence would do the trick ?
