The true story of the stairway is yet to be told. Since modern engineering principles pretty much guarantee that there had to be a remarkably similar "sister" structure, most likely with a reversed rotation. While the wood itself ("Picea Josefii" as it was named circa 1997 by Forrest N. Easley) helps us place the original date of manufacturing of the parts of that wooden relic to long prior to the birth of Christopher Columbus. A situation where the only presently known possibility is that of a strictly New World, underwater "Climbing Chalice" for the underwater transport of the dead, and so of an immense archeological importance.

Meanwhile, the obvious fact that some interior support must somehow be at work merely adds to the complexity of the stairway from a structural engineering standpoint. Since even a solid spiral of laminated wood wouldn't likely be able to handle the load without compressing its way down like a non-helical slinky.

As for the dates of the "original" stairway's assembly in what is now called the Loretto Chapel, the spring of 1880 gets the win. Between March 19th, 1880 (Feast of St. Joseph day) and June the 7th, 1880. Roughly one month before Ulysses S. Grant showed up in Santa Fe and had his photo with family taken on July the 17th, 1880.

I've known this story for a long time and it's all over social media. The miracle of it is fascinating, but the story has been overdone.
