Gortyn (or Gortyna, Gortys) is an archaeological site in the heart of the island of Crete. The area of Gortyn was first inhabited in 7000BC. After the Roman conquest of Crete the Romans decided to make Gortyn their Capital of the island of of Cyrenaica (Libya). Gortyn was a very big city and its current excavation area is at least 400 acres. A small village Agioi Deka has been build on the excavation site with the re-use in the Middle Ages of the ancient stone. Gortyn was an important city state in the history of the world. Firstly, the discovery of the first ancient city laws in world history which were carved in stone tablet and can still be seen today in the Odeon. Secondly, the friend of St. Paul lived in this city as the first bishop of Crete St. Titus. St. Paul visited Titus in Gortyn during his life a couple of times. In Gortyn the remains of many public and urban buildings are still visible although the area is so big that excavation still continue these days. The excavation budget is limited and the preservation of the unique Minoan culture has a higher priority.

In the 7th century Crete and the city of Gortyn were invaded by Arab forces. The city was completely destroyed and many of its citizens killed. After the attack Gortyn was completely abandoned. The Arabs founded Heraklion (or Al Khandak) as their capital on the island of Crete. Today it is still possible to visit many remains of ancient Gortyn - although many buildings were completely destroyed after the Arab conquest - the Praetorium, the Odeon, the baths, the early Christian Basilica, the Church of St. Titus, the Ancient Greek Theater, the temple of Apollo and the temple of the Egyptian Gods.
