If the mirror modifier ends up on the wrong axis you can reset the position by pressing CTRL/A, Then click . ' position' in the dropdown menu. You can then choose the axis as per your instru tions . Great follow along though !

Unfortunately even with wire frame mode, it's still only ever selecting one vertice, so I have to do it manually. Still looks great though!
