My cousin had a larger terrier mix of some sort. He was the best squirrel dog ever. I think he just had a natural instinct to hunt squirrels. If he saw you pick up a rifle, off he went to the timber. And sometimes he would go to the timber and start barking and try to lure you to come hunt with him. He would stay on a tree and bark and bark and bark. If the squirrel tried going through the treetops he was stay right with it.

Mossy Oak, I agree most of the time it's a process. I grew up on a farm in WI at 7 we got a runt Border Collie. From the start my dad and I would use a Squirrel tail to play with her. A few weeks later she caught a rabbit, I skinned it and used the hide to train her.Three months later come hunting season she was on it. She had a different bark for each. Now to your point about legwork at first she wandered to far out and would bark or if she treed one and you didn't shoot it she wasn't leaving. 90% of the time if you looked hard enough their was a squirrel. Thanks for the post.

Some dogs naturally want to hunt. I rescued a mix Lab that loves hunting squirrels. She is pushing me into squirrel hunting again. She loves it so I'm going to train and let her hunt.

I have a pure bred German shepherd I her at a animal shelter and she knew the word squirrel we found that out fast but then she showed me where they where and she would wait at the tree for a long ass time until I said to leave and I told her get it when one dropped and she brought it to me

Awesome tips!!! Watching a pup get it all figured out is 90% of the fun!! Once they are finished dogs, it’s not as exciting. Then it’s time to start the next generation off them and keep going. 👍

I asked a military buddy of mine from Arkansas (the kind of guy that never buys meat at the store because he hunts for everything except the chickens he raises for meat and eggs) which kind of dog in his opinion was the best for all around hunting. His response: “toy poodle.” I said B.S. and he laughed at me. He said he stopped feeding his wife’s toy poodle but kept lots of fresh water available to the dog. He said after 36 hours of no food he took the dog into the woods and when he found a squirrel he shot it. He went to where the squirrel fell he let the poodle smell it and put his mouth on it, then he gutted the squirrel and threw the guts on the ground and let the toy poodle eat the gut pile... he said he can’t go Anywhere without that poodle pointing out squirrels, even in places he didn’t think there were squirrels (like a tree in the middle of an indoor mall), that dog is pointing out where the squirrels he said it took a few more trips to the woods to teach it to retrieve every time, but the dog is completely reliable and it took less than a couple weeks effort.... Toy Poodle, the best squirrel dog.... who woulda thought?

My 3 year old beagle just recently became obssessed with squirrels. She has always been prey driven but now she just seeks out squirrels in trees and will wait at the tree and it takes alot to pry her attention away...its almost fustrating...i live in city/suburbs not the country. I like that she has that prey drive and i want her to have chances to get those oppurtunities but I have no experience with hunting :/

THIS VIDEO DOES NOT ACTUALLY TEACH YOU HOW TO TRAIN THE DOG. IT PROVIDES A FEW TIPS, BUT THE TITLE IS MISLEADING. MOSSY OAK SHOULD KNOW THE DIFFEERENCE.
