What are some differences in stretched canvas? Save yourself time (and money!) with this quick overview of stretched canvas. What is a GOOD canvas and what do you need to look out for.

Hello and welcome to The Gold Coast Art School channel!

Today we're all about STRETCHED CANVAS. What are the differences between them, and what do you need to look out for? This is a short and snappy video giving you a brief overview, so you get to know the basics about canvas before you buy.

One of the amazing things these days is that buying a stretched canvas can be quite easy! They are available freely through a lot of different shops and online. And you don't need to spend a lot to get started. Where the money starts to come in is if you'd like to use more specialty fabrics. Cotton is the most common, but there are varying types of cotton canvas, as well as entirely different fabric types you can try.

The frame is also important when it comes to a stretched canvas. Depending on the size you're after, you may need something more substantial to handle the tension of the fabric. It's worth buying a better type of frame for very large painted canvas works, but thankfully it doesn't have to be expensive 🙂

Since 1995, we've been teaching creatives how to successfully paint and draw (even when they think they can't!) We have classes for beginners and intermediates, and welcome advanced artists too. Many of our students love coming to our school not only for the depth of knowledge our tutors bring to each session, but for our relaxed and welcoming community feel. Our adult art students usually use oil paints, but we encourage any medium, including acrylics, pastels and watercolours. Check out our social media and website for info, or email/call us any time to chat to Jess and book your spot in our next class!

Brisbane Art Shed has a huge range! But if I'm buying online I tend to go for linen-covered panels.

Would you suggest painting with the canvas upright or horizontal. For these demos your painting surface seems to be horizontal. Does it matter?

*QOTD: Where is the BEST place to get canvas from?* Here in Australia, we tend to go to art shops, Spotlight and sometimes $2 shops depending on the use of the canvas. But tell us in the comments where you go, and that can really help others out 🙂 Jess
