The idea of a deluxe e-reader is almost an oxymoron, up there with “hot ice and wondrous strange snow.” The popular notion is that if you have enough money for something like the Kindle Oasis you probably already own an iPad with the Kindle app on it – and if you don’t, then you settle for a more affordable Kindle that gets the job done almost as well. But having spent 2 months with all the conveniences of the 4G-enabled Kindle Oasis, I have to say I’d have a hard time going back to any other e-reader. I’m MrMobile and this is the Kindle Oasis

Still rocking my Paperwhite and I love it. Could never read for long periods of time on a tablet or phone display. Starts to hurt your eyes after a while. I've been tempted occasionally by the Oasis, but in the end can never justify the price.

Thanks again for reviewing a device that people keep telling us has no future. And it was clear - you get it. "No notifications... just books." (And so much easier on the eyes.) The other major reason for this e-reader - the display size. It isn't a postage stamp.

I have one of the latest Oasis and I also had the original, smaller one. I love this thing. It's so much better to read from than a book because you don't have to worry about the binding getting in the way, and you don't have to deal with the glare of a tablet's screen becasue of the e-ink.

I got the latest Kindle Oasis for Christmas, and while it probably is more expensive than it should be, I have to say, I love that thing. The one-handed bezel/button design is brilliant, the 7-inch E-ink display is nice, and while a tablet can certainly do many more things, I think what I needed for the sake of my mental health was something that lacks all the distractions of your smartphone and really is just a book reader. (While the E-ink Kindle does have a web browser, it's bare-bones enough that there's little temptation to get sucked into social media--it's there if you need a basic web browser in a pinch; a friend pointed out to me that you often need to have one for such things as connecting to hotel wi-fi.)

The utterly seamless integration with the Amazon e-book store is what you might call an attractive nuisance. I love the dictionary (and Wikipedia) integration too, and the fact that you get free downloads of something like 40 dictionaries of various languages.

Based on my experience of this device, I think I'd say that where E-ink really shines is reading in daytime or bright light, especially if it's bright enough that you don't need to use the light at all--the experience is just unparalleled there (in *direct* sunlight the display may actually be more readable than a paper book), and it's a situation where most modern displays struggle. For reading at night, the excellent front light system (which, in the 2020 model, now DOES have an adjustable color temperature) makes it still a decent experience. But OLEDs probably do have them beat under dark conditions, apart from power consumption--the contrast and black level of a front-lit E-ink display aren't quite as good. The Oasis does have a light-on-dark mode, but E-ink displays really aren't made for that, whereas OLEDs are in their element there.

I still have and use the first kindle. It's really basic but there are times when as you say, when you read you want to be left alone. Plus I can order books from anywhere and I can read forever in sunlight. Ah, makes me want to go to the beach.

I am surprised that Amazon took out the ever so important paper texture that used to exist over the screen and nobody seemed to care! It didn't change the appearance but the fact that you felt you were touching paper when switching pages, wow. That was sweet!

Way too expensive for something that only reads books and is useless for magazines, PDFs, anything with illustrations or diagrams or big tables.
