Why Do We Have to Suffer?

This week, Lorna teaches us about the role suffering plays in our lives.

''Sometimes when I'm asked that question, it's not so easy to answer because lots of us would say, why do we have to suffer? And when we use the word suffer, that can be why do things go wrong as well? Why was I made homeless? Why did I lose my job? All of that is suffering. And suffering is well is health. Sometimes I always remember meeting someone and they were saying that they were suffering a lot because they were overweight, and I felt very sad for them. But then again, you had to look at why were they overweight, what caused it in that sense? What suffering, what pain, emotional pain they were going through. So suffering is a huge, huge area because each and every one of us suffer in our lives and we suffer at many different times.''

Additional Upcoming Retreats:

Lorna will be hosting a series of two and five night retreats on various themes at Sanctuary on the following dates:

October 23 - 28 2024

When I am worried or bothered about a family member being ill, troubled, at risk, or about something in my own life, I go to your Prayer Scroll and write a request. It always makes me feel better, knowing that you are praying for us. Accepting suffering in ourselves, our family or innocent people in wars, is extremely difficult.

I feel like you always had God to talk to, and I’m so glad you did. We don’t have that same direct access to hope and peace. I just wish the suffering wasn’t so soul-crushing, leaving people devoid of hope and filled with fear. The mental anguish that people go through affects our human mind, body, AND our godly soul. It’s taken peoples lives. It’s cruel. Suffering can be seen in a positive light only if you’re capable of pushing through it. Many don’t. I don’t want to be defined by suffering or for overcoming bad things. I deserve love and happiness as do others who struggle and I and others deserve to identify and be defined by love and good things. I just wish there was a better explanation for this. I pray every day for mental clarity, peace, and stability as I’m sure others do but the prayers go unanswered. I have faith that they may be answered one day but there’s a chance that won’t happen. It’s a very scary place to be in. Anyway, thank you for taking the time to speak on this topic and for trying to help us all.

I believe suffering is part of this life in big or small ways which become lessons for us to learn, but also keep us humble with hope. Finally, we pass on to a place of no suffering, peace & love. Tks Lorna!❤☘️

Lorna, I will never understand the need for suffering. I trust God I put all my faith and love in him and lean not on my understanding but his and one day I will understand but right now I would never want my kids to suffer like people do with disease or accidents so they can learn. I went to school to learn and didn't suffer to have to learn. I worked hard to achieve my career, but I didn't suffer to have to achieve it so a lot can be learned without having to suffer. But like I said, I trust God and I know one day he will explain it to me, but right now I just don't understand the needs for suffering.

Lorna, I don’t think people are talking about livable, normal, reversible, suffering. I don’t think people are talking about the suffering they bring on themselves. I think we are referring to EXTREME suffering; the kind one did not bring on themselves and for which there is no relief or cure; the kind that drives people insane before it kills them and sometimes takes others with them. This level of suffering is unnatural and it shows, because people don’t recover from it, but devolve due to it. I know God created us so that it could know itself, but when is enough, enough?

Lorna I know it is meant to expand our compassion and it does, and I am grateful for it, I just get very sad about the children in the war torn areas and the animals. I read your email about the man who was contemplating suicide, that was so helpful. I wish I could ease suffering some how all around the world but I can at least pray and listen to people. I just don't understand how humanity can be so horrible on the one hand but then again so wonderful on the other? It is true that we become stronger after making it through tough times.

I just offer suffering to Lord Jesus to save my soul and others. Or to help others for something that I can’t help with.
