honestly, there's never a "fair" situation when it comes to tipped employees. and hostesses get tipped out most of the time too.

I'm guessing you've never had a job where all you make is your tips?

My step daughter was getting paid $2.78 an hour as a waitress because they get tips. She'd work 2 weeks and her check would be a whole $78. She'd also have to split tips with the cook and busboys. She was very good at her job and usually got really good tips, but by the time she'd split it up 3 ways, she was getting very little. When she'd go to do her taxes, the IRS was taxing her tips at a higher estimated $ amount than she actually got in tips because of the split with both the busboys and cooks, who were getting paid a higher wage and weren't getting taxed on tips. If you didn't split your tips, your tables weren't getting cleaned and your orders were being held up by the cooks. It was the same situation at every place she worked, so it wasn't just at one job. If the place had a hostess, her tips were split 4 ways because the hostess wouldn't sit people in your section if you didn't split tips with her too. I'm so glad she changed career paths after doing that for many years. The IRS judt picked a $amount to tax the tips whether you made that much in tips or not. It's really ridiculous what happens in restaurant work, especially to the waitresses.

A tip is a gift and making it mandatory has caused lots of controversy. To my knowledge, Monetary gifts are not taxable.

Life isn't fair, so get over it. An hourly wage is guaranteed and tips aren't!

Not fair to pay off student debt either

Yes tipped employees such as a waitress should not have their tips taxed.

Get rid of income tax and switch to a 15% purchase tax. Then, irs has an easier job tracking taxes paid by a smaller business focus than dealing with hundreds of millions of individuals.

I disagree with Brad. I’ve waited tables and most of the time tips come at the price of putting up with some terrible people while still smiling.

You need to look at how much waiters make in tips. Some make a large amount in tips but others barely make money w/ tips. What should be done is get rid of tip wages and bring back the original purpose of tips which is giving a little extra for the waiter going above and beyond in service. As for taxing tips, Anything above, say $50 gets taxed.

Get rid of income tax too. That’ll make it fair

As a former taxi driver and waitress, I agree with this!! I was making way below the minimum wage and not only did I rely on tips, I had to give the busboys 10-20% of my tips. I was making $2.38/hr in 2002 as a waitress at a diner and bless the busboys hearts for refusing to take my tips. Some people think being a server makes SOOO MUCH in tips but unless you're a hooters girl or TGIFridays or something along those lines MIGHT make a slight bit more but independent diners aren't like that.
They also let me work 13+ hour shifts when I was 16!! Overnight. As long as I had parent/guardian permission.
I also lied my age, I was actually 15 when I started but I lied about my birthday (only a 6 month difference) NOT SAYING I WAS RIGHT but I hadda do what I needed to take care of my mother and lil brother.. BUT THEY DIDN'T CHECK OR ASK ANYTHING OR FOR ANY PROOF OF WHO I SAID I WAS!!

GOD BLESS AMERICA AND I HOPE Y'ALL ARE HAVING A WONDERFUL DAY!!!!

Service workers don’t make 7 bucks an hour on average they make 3-5 an hour and rely on tips to make up the rest

Its a double edged sword. As a bartender . Not paying taxes amd claiming tips can really cripple you . We pay taxes .

Just a side note: As a long time bartender, no one in the restaurant industry reports 100% of their tips.

"Read my lips: no new taxes" Sounds familiar 🤔

I also think tips should not be taxed. According to H&R Block, recipients of gifts are not taxed. How are tips not considered gifts?

How about we insist that waiters get paid a decent wage? Get rid of this weird thing where they can pay two dollars an hour to servers.

I support this. We leave a tip with money that has been tazed, if it is a digital tip then that gets taxed, and once added into someones pay it can be taxed again. We get taxed on the same dollar over and over which is ridiculous.
