Back on top: music producer William Orbit on his return to music

His record sales soared to a staggering 200 million - turning him into the go-to producer for likes of Prince, U2, Kraftwerk and Queen. But then a move to LA coincided with a string of high-profile flops.

Four years ago - after moving back to the UK, his drug addiction was compounded by a nervous breakdown. But that's all changed, his creativity is back, with a second album on the way - as he's been telling Krishnan Guru Murthy.

William Orbit is one of the best producers in the world and one of the most underrated.

Ray of Light is still the best Madonna Album in my opinion. It still sounds amazing.

William Orbit was like a synth god in the 90's; his first three Strange Cargo albums were absolutely amazing.

Strange cargo 3 was the only album I listened to for a whole year in 1993. So much depth and nuance with multilayered melodies over the soft dance beat.

There's nothing more satisfying than going through a rough patch, no matter how long, then starting to see the light shine again.

Love this guy. I had the great good fortune in the early 90’s to do a couple of tours with William and Bassomatic. What a talent and all round nice guy.

Pure Shores is one of the most beautiful pop songs ever.

Genius, of course, but also a beautiful, humble man. Much respect, maestro.

Jeez. Only just found this guy. At 58 I never knew he did all this stuff! Genius! The guy is legend. Awesome.

His ear for sound is surpassed only by his incredible skill in shaping it. Some of the most intelligent sound mixing I've heard. One-of-a-kind.

Orbit has a genius. Glad he’s open to It working through him. Genius worked through him even as a child.

Unfortunately I read that William had a hard time working with Damon Albarn, He wasn’t pleasant apparently.

I only discovered William because of Madonna’s album Ray of Light, not a fan of Madonna much but I enjoyed that album and found all his amazing albums since, absolutely loved “Water from a vine leaf” William’s music is very ethereal

Damn he was a huge part of the late 90s/early 2000s pop sound, which I think has aged really well.

I went to a place called the Whirlygig about 1993, and sat down at a table loving the music... we quickly struck up intelligent conversation with the people opposite, who turned out to be William Orbit and Beth Orton.... we gabbled on for hours, and both of them were humble, interesting and entertaining. Slowly came to realise that there was something about them I couldn't pin down. On the tube home someone randomly came up to me and told he who they were, and I was straight down HMV on Monday buying Strange Cargo 3 and Water from a Vine Leaf.
