The Stunning Collapse of 23AndMe

After the at home Genetic Testing market exploded in the early 2000's, one of its largest players has now imploded with spectacular fanfare.

23andMe, once a darling child of Silicon Valley, is now bottoming out in a variety of ways, from its board of directors leaving en masse, to data breaches and widespread layoffs.

After associating itself with the high and mighty Hollywood elites, and industry leaders around the globe, it is now a cautionary tale about what happens when a woman with too much power, cements herself too much as the figurehead of a troubled company. At home genetic testing might be popular, but its far from a sure thing when you run the company into the ground.

23 and me’s privacy statement doesn’t allow them to sell your data without your explicit consent but if they’re bought out your data can be sold as part of that acquisition for the new owner to do what they please

So like once Wojcicki pressured the founder to leave, half the company got laid off, there was a data breach, board says "We're out. GL". I bet someone sleazy buys this company for cheap, does something heinous with the data.

Is it any surprise that the woman who drove 23AndMe into the ground is the sister of the woman who drove Youtube into the ground?

I've stayed far away from these genetic testing kits, no matter how curious I might be about my genetic heritage, because I don't trust a private company with my full genetic code, and I don't think you should either. Right now I feel extremely vindicated in my position.

Always pay close attention to who runs this stuff, you will become terrified at the fact that basically 120 people control your online life.

Found a sister thru this. Caused some turmoil in the family but ultimately was a very good thing. She knew she was adopted and was looking for us for a decade. Timing was perfect.

When the company is willing to lie about your results and turn over your dna to police no wonder it is failing

Wow, another Wojcicki running a formerly great company into the ground. Who'd have thought?

I remember 10 years ago, my high-school biology teacher mentioning not to take those at home genetic tests cause that data is very valuable for insurance. And now after studying biotechnology and data science, I see how right she was 💀

Anne Wojcicki speedran the fall of 23andMe like a Silicon Valley Any% Fail run.

8:04 holy hell. I'm a web developer, preventing something like that is like the most basic security thing you can do. I can't even imagine such incompetence

The Wojcickis are in the same vein as Elizabeth Holmes.

Ive always assumed this was data collection for bioweapon research.

I remember when this DNA genetic testing fad first came out, and i thought to myself its an insane idea to let a company hold this kind of information about you. Glad I listened to my instincts. Talk about the ultimate form of data harvesting. Itd be like trusting Facebook with your medical records.

To paraphrase an old expression, "Always count on a woman named Wojcicki to screw things up." 🤦‍♀️
