HiYo,
When it's yellow in NEI, just double-click in the box to get it to return to normal. As i understand it, it's to search your inventory when it's highlighted yellow.
Enjoying your series!

Buildcraft changed the steam engine to the stirling engine. The steam engine you were looking at is from thermal expansion, and the other three steam engines are from railcraft.

I think if you were to add IC2, you could still generate the new items if you were to walk to where new fresh land is generated so keep in mind where you haven't adventured to.

I'm used to using IC2 as well, but actually it is interesting playing this without it. There are other ways to do things. For example the pulverizer from thermal expansion lets you get double your ores just like the macerator. There is also the induction smelter. With rich slag you can actually triple your bars. So it interesting finding new ways to set up production lines without IC2. Be creative!

If you have to, you can save what you changed to the world and recreate, then add all your stuff. An extreme example, but it would work.

You were close with the steam engine. It needs coal, but it also requires a bucket of water (no water, no steam, right?) The magmatic engine is an engine that runs on lava, btw. No need to wonder any longer about it.

One of my top-priority rules when dealing with mineshafts, oblisks, and turtle holes is pour a bucket of water near it so you dont fall and get trapped or die. Dont use it like an elevator though unless it is at least a 2x2 hole or you will drowned going up or down. Sorry you lost so many levels :'(

When you add mods and play in a world your created without the mods installed, you won't get world generation blocks for parts of the world that have already been generated. When you visit new areas, it will generate it and you will get the new features from the mod in the world then. That make sense?
