Welp, this video made me finally decide to dive in to C-41 development. I'm tired of shipping my film to a lab for $$$ when my film already costs $$$. Seems like a no-brainer.

This one of those YT videos where someone with no technical knowledge of the subject and having watched a few other YT videos of a "how to do it" nature, decides to do yet another "how to" of his own. Of course, this practice risks omission of important information and perpetuation of urban legends and misinformation carried forward from other videos, and boy, do he packs in those errors. Let's talk "stabilizer". About 15 years ago, the C-41 films modified their dye formation to make the dye more resistant to color fading and shifting - true. Before then, stabilizers were required. But that doesn't mean they are unnecessary now, because it does other things as well. Commercial labs still use stabilizer in their C-41 process because it protects the film and dyes from failure resulting from inadequate fixing and washing. (It does not eliminate the need to fully fix and wash, but labs tend to have these problems when running large volume batches.) Washing: minimum requirement for C-41 is a flow of fresh water (a continuous exchange) over the film for at least three minutes, more to be safe. The wash process shown here is one wash solution, agitated in the tank for one minute. That is practically no wash at all. Couple that poor washing with no stabilizer, and this kid is going to be tossing his negatives in the garbage in a year or two.

Great video! How long will the developer and blix last after being mixed?

Can you rinse the film before putting the blix so that the blix doesn’t get contaminated with the developer?

Thanks for showing this. Yeah I was wondering about stabilizer because my other one unicolour c-41 kit has it. Ok I will do distilled water then! Recently they have banned Unicolor one because of stabilizer. Now I only have one choice! Cinestill one. Thanks
