Most important thing at battery day, is not the battery. ?
There has been a lot of talk about Batteries, and battery day. And that is because this is going to be a very important day, in the history of electric cars. But not only because of the new technology in batteries, but just as important, how we will make all these batteries the world is going to need.
Because the Car industry will need about 9TWH of batteries for all cars in the world to become electric. And that is just the cars.
Then we have all the powerwalls, and megapack, which is getting very popular because we have so many examples of what a good business case this battery power plant has been. This will also drive the demand for batteries up like crazy. And all this production will drive the price down just as crazy.
So let’s take a look at just how much production is needed, and why I do think that my predictions of the $20/kwh battery, is not crazy.
Let’s dive right in.

As battery production increases, economies of scale will make them cheaper.

Likewise, as EV sales go up, ICE sales will go down and they will lose out on their economies of scale and they will become more expensive.

This will be the real 1-2 punch that knocks out ICE much faster than people think.

Australia would a good place for a battery manufacturing plant, they have all the raw materials they need,

The result of cheaper, longer-lasting batteries is a cleaner world eliminating most, if not all ICEs, bringing about a level of world-wide prosperity never experienced before.! No question R&D will create the necessary storage capacity to eliminate fossil-fueled power plants. Every new home built will be equipped with solar panels, battery energy storage units, and connected to the grid. In short, the collective solar house arrays will become our power plants.

$20 at cells level or pack level? 10 years from now it is possible that price target but also substantial battery’s technology improvements is needed.

Prices will drop in a non-linear manner, the future is exciting, can’t wait for parity with ICE vehicles to arrive !

I own a long range model 3 with a 75kwh battery, I'd love to swap that out for a new to be developed battery so I can go from 320 mile range up to that 1200plus mile range. That would be fantastic and those older batteries could be used in a power wall.

Can't wait, Tesla recently dropped the price on the Model S, Model X and Model 3.

Good intro btw. Tesla is likely to hoard the vast majority of the car market industry, just as Microsoft does with its 80% - 90% share of the PC market. Or Google's 90% search engine market domination. It would be silly to have another car that is not a tesla.

Material costs will have to come down substantially to get anywhere close to that number.

It takes visionaries to see the world of tomorrow. If you look at the legacy corporations that have been controlled by financial minds, they are incompetent at being visionaries. Xerox invented the graphical user interface, but it took Jobs to see the vision of how it could be used. GM invested billions in electric autos for decades but never had a visionary CEO to understand this was the way cars would be sold in the future. Maybe it is the way our financial model on wall street works is not good for innovation and capitalism.

$20 / kWh - don't I wish. For the C rating I need the best I can do (as a consumer) is $422 / kWh for Sony Murata VTC5A cells. I'd be over the moon at even $100 / kWh for something like these.
