From a historical standpoint, morotedori is definitely uncommon in in the lower levels of Daitō-ryū, but a variation does show up in the kata ude nage technique in the Hiden Mokuroku, specifically in the Sankajō subset. There could be more in the uragata of the Hiden Mokuroku, or maybe Hiden Ogi or Goshin'yō-no-te, but Daitō-ryū has done a pretty good job of keeping those sets under wraps. I occasionally wonder if maybe some of the things that are thought of as Ueshiba's innovations are things from those higher sets that he decided should be passed on at earlier levels.

As evidence of this idea, some of Daitō-ryū's Aiki no Jutsu set has been "leaked", and most of those techniques show up in aikido as our common, but otherwise nameless, techniques that we loosely categorize as "kokyūnage". However, Aiki no Jutsu is divided only between katatedori and ryōtedori, so morotedori is not in evidence there.

I also wonder how much morotedori and other "aikido innovations" might show up in Takuma Hisa's "Kannagara no Budō" volumes that photo-document the sōden (additional techniques not described in the old written scrolls), but those volumes also seem to be kept pretty tightly under wraps by the Takumakai.

Anyways, I'm not saying this to try to say that either Aikido or Daitō-ryū is better than the other; I just happen to be both a history nerd and an aikido nerd, so I like comparing how things have changed over time.

Love it, both as an aikido guy and as a knife guy. Great video.

"I'm always working from a position of disadvantage into a position of advantage." This sounds like something Ueshiba-sensei might have said before couching the point that that shift is always available inside some term like "being made to stand in the mouth of creation."

In Yoshinkan Aikido we have something similar, but we call it Yonkajo, or 4th control.

Thanks for the clarification of morote dori not being part of the original syllabus, but couldn't it be argued that morote dori is found within the various katas?

Also the kakae dori bodyhold, works great against boxers or those swinging wild, or before opponent draw weapon, or perhaps ushiro kakae dori bodyhold if opponent's weapon is drawn against others to give them time to run away.

A common grip judokas use is omote eri dori, I hope to see more exploration series you're doing now focused on these grips.

What about pulling away with the two on one and letting go of the weight on the close leg going into a squat and sweep the arm across the front of the body towards the far hip while twisting on the feet so that you turn 180 away from the initial position away from the uke. Like a horizontal sword swipe with a hip and turn.

Morotedori could be considered as attempt to make some udedori technique for example ikkyo.

I was playing soccer once and a player kept attacking me morote dori--grabbing one arm with two hands. The first time I lost the ball, second time, the same. The third time I thought, I know what to do when someone attacks me this way. So I dropped my elbow and threw him kokyu ho and guess what? He wasn't injured, but he stopped grabbing me!

This technique is in a lot of karate kata. Look at meikyo, bassai sho etc..

It's possible that Morote Dori comes from other systems of JuJutsu. I have a friend in Asayama Ryu, and they have several Te Hodoki from Morote Dori.
