Thx for this cuz when I take the train to see my grandparents I’ll know what to expect they live in Kirkcudbright but that’s not a station anymore so ill get off at Dumfries and get them to pick me up

My wife and I are planning on short break to Glasgow, from Newcastle in May, but unfortunately tickets are still not available to book.
However, a friend suggested we look into travelling via Carlisle then up the WCML to Glasgow, rather than the more obvious ECML to Edinburgh route.
Wowzer! I thought .. what a brilliant idea .. perhaps going via Edinburgh but returning via Carlisle, giving us the opportunity of seeing different scenery and even trying different train companies.

We actually used LNER in November for a trip to London (or first train journey for 20+ years) and have already booked another trip to Edinburgh for march (again LNER) On the ECML there is the Lumo train as well as Trans Pennine Express to perhaps try and Avanti on the WCML. Yes, there’s ScotRail too, but I prefer the fancy trains

How do you rate the various companies mentioned and as far a scenery is concerned, would the Carlise WCML version warrant the extra £20 cost. (extra cost for two, based on 2nd class tickets in April)
