Combat consists of spamming the jump kick. You'll occasionally try another move to spice it up until you are reminded that your other moves and combos leave you wide open.

The gameplay always looked lacking, but I am buying to support my love for what WayForward is doing with the franchise.

I actually played a fan translation of this game already, but I'll support WayForward on this one. Besides, the updated art looks AMAZING. I believe it's time for a Kunio or River City Girls game using that anime art for sprites. I'm kinda over pixel art.

Super Dodgeball on NES is still my favorite entry in the franchise even though it isn't a beat'em up RPG.

Great review and honest! The game seems broken in terms balance and difficulty gameplay is no streets of rage, final fight or even rcg. not good and it can be frustrating to play

Based on the review footage, it looks like the reviewer may not know how to do any of the grapple or special moves (since none of it is shown). If that's the case, then there's more to the combat than the reviewer realizes.

So this game is a resurrected SNES game or it's a modern game that just looks like one?

W no plans to extend or tighten the gameplay and it being mediocre at best, way forward probably could have done something more worthwhile. It’s not like there’s any shortage of good games that could very easily be even better w simple upgrades/changes via better tech.

Can you save your progress in this one? Or is it still the password method?

I disagree with many points in the review. It’s slower pace than Final Fight or Streets of Rage, and yes the gameplay is simpler than SoR but not simpler that FF: you can kick fallen enemies and even can sit and punch enemies in the face, something not game outside of this franchise allows you to. There’s a few special moves but I didn’t see in the footage any of them, not a single time so I think who played the game doesn’t know how to execute them. That’s clearly more moves than Final Fight.
The graphics are very colorful which follows the chibi/manga style of the franchise, with parallax effects and many transparencies, things not even Final Fight 3 got on that level (from what I remember, it’s been decades since I played that one). The disco stage, the bridge, the fire stage the windows inside the school, the roller coaster etc…
The big downfall of the game for me is the weird jump arc and the lack of weapons.
