I've had my tongue pierced for 10 years and never had anything bad happen...its all on how you take care of the piercing and yourself.

A tongue piercing heals fairly easy (in about two to four weeks)
It's one of the few oral piercings that doesn't cause too much damage to teeth and gums.
The piercing pain isn't that high compared to other piercings.

Did it 18 years ago. I’m fine. Gotta have well fitting jewelry.

This is why you go to a professional piercer who knows what they're doing. A good piercer will give the client a properly sized post that doesn't interfere with gums or teeth. As far as infection is concerned, if you follow proper aftercare guidelines it's highly unlikely any infection will occur.

The misunderstanding of the chipped teeth, receding gums, and such, is when it gets pierced, they give you a long bar. The long bar is to compensate the swelling of course, but after the 2-6 week healing process, it'd highly advised to put in a shorter bar as to play with it less, and for it to not scrape on your gums or teeth anymore. As long as you brush your teeth daily and USE MOUTHWASH, your mouth stays clean, and so does the piercing.

I did do this. 22 years ago. Teeth are fine. Gums are fine. No infection. No bad breath.

No issues at all with my tongue piercing. It hardly touches my teeth or gums…. It’s not long enough to mistakenly bite it, I think tongue piercings get a more bad rap than they deserve. The over the top “risks” I’ve read and heard about them just don’t make sense at all now that I have one. Unless you’re getting a placement too close to the tip of your tongue or purposely clicking your jewelry against your teeth that is… and if you have that habit (like I did for a few weeks) a softer acrylic barbell end or “ball” can help reduce the possibility of damage.

Plastic balls on the barbell’s saves your teeth from getting cracked or chipped and most likely chances are people’s breathe already smells like shit before this

It doesn't cause bad breath and doesn't cause problems as long as you have common sense and it doesn't even hurt much at all and heals within 2 weeks

It’s all about how you take care of them. I’ve had my tongue ring for 12years and nothing has happened so...
