Then there won't be a point in having two names. Both were created for different purposes, laptops are small PCs while tablets are like larger smartphones. One is made for producing content while other to view it. Companies will try to keep then separate I guess.

OMG.... thank you for posting this.... I've been suggested so many times to switch to tablets as my work laptop but I was never comfortable. I think tablets are travel friendly to carry along for meetings or for entertainment but not as main work laptop. I knew it but I was confused. Thanks for clarifying so well

The problems you highlight are very valid. The biggest issue is that the top manufacturers produce both windows/macOS machines and tablets. Their incentive is maximizing their profits by pushing people to both types of machines for different purposes. That de-incentivizes program writers to optimize for true cross-platform productivity.
