Selected by "Conscious Movie Reviews," "Maudie" is a biopic romance and drama film. When Maud Dowley was forced to live with Aunt Ida, she was miserable under her care for having debilitating rheumatoid arthritis. By taking a job as a live-in housekeeper for Everett, a gruff fish peddler, Maud claimed her independence, using art for greater self-expression by painting outdoor scenes of Nova Scotia throughout his tiny home. As opposites, they grew in attraction to each other and became husband and wife. Requests for her artwork first were made by Susan, a New York journalist, which lead to widespread publicity and growing fame. Maud attracted many admirers of her paintings from far and wide. Her popularity upset Everett. The locals who watched their televised interview saw him as cold and cruel. This upset him for bringing up his emotional woundings, like mistrust, from childhood abandonment as an orphan, that hurt their marriage.

Maud Lewis died in 1970. She has become one of Canada's most beloved folk artists.

Sally Hawkins as usual gives an incredible portrayal of the main character of this movie. She is such a talent that should never be overseen. Bravo to this incredible actor.

Sally Hawkins performance was spectacular and moving throughout.
At it's core, it's a story of two lonely people, who find comfort and solace with each other.

Maudie is a great movie about real people during a different time, of hard lives in rural areas of early Canada. Her paintings are tributes to human resilience and endurance. I am so thankful to have seen this movie.

Watched the film and cried, but cried more when when I read the real story....she didn’t get any money because he took it, so he kept Maud in poverty, him resenting Maud and being spiteful to her because he was jealous, him being murdered etc etc
So, beautiful film but I’m old enough to take the it’s supposed to be a TRUE STORY not a fluffy fairy tale

I saw this film on a Lufthansa flight on route to Vienna to get me some high culture. I wept with pride of what we have right here.

i really enjoyed this review...with one exception..everett may have been shattered (so was maud) but he took the decision to be an angry, bitter and self centered man. their marriage was filled with neglect, lack of empathy, and a lack of respect. everett, at least portrayed in the movie, was a sociopath/ narcissist. and maud, bless her heart, took his abuse, surely believing she deserved no better.

this is just my opinion, and i don’t really know if it’s right or wrong, it just upset me to hear and see some of the same things i experienced in my own marriage.

thank you for this very thoughtful and well made review. i love this movie and maud.

Such a wonderful film. Ethan Hawke is truly a talented actor. Salley Hawkins as well although I didn't know of her before watching the movie.

Stating that Maud's rheumatoid arthritis was a reflection of her emotional state ... rather than the greatest contributor and cause of her emotional state ... is incredibly ignorant and irresponsible.
