GP-5 REVIEW - Affordable gas mask or dangerous relic?

Many of you have already seen our GP-5 “review” as it is one of the most watched videos on our channel. Now I’m not sure how many of you will be surprised when I say it wasn’t a review at all, just an April Fools' Day joke. I know this must be devastating and I’m truly sorry.

To set the record straight, we decided to make a proper review in which we took an in-depth look at GP-5 from a perspective of modern day survivalist in order to test it and evaluate how relevant the mask is in 2024.

Considering the Soviet Union made 100million plus, one for just about every man and woman in the country, it is a rather basic but functional design. It is still being issued to training units in Russia. Oh and about the asbestos issue, yeah, filters have 3-13% asbestos in the paper lower level, yeah there's a bit of a danger but if you have to use one of these, asbestos is your least worry. You can get more modern filter which I recommend if you need to use this often. These aren't the best of modern but they are cheap and will get the job done if ever needed.

I had one that had a long canister for a filter with an even longer hose. At the time, my home had heavy smokers. The mask came in handy when I needed to go the kitchen, lol.

GP5 is fine. It represents a compromise of features for price. I use my GP5, with a Chinese #3 filter, for spray-painting. Zero paint fumes detected. Compatible filters and hoses are sold on Aliexpress. You can even get new-production GP-5-style masks called Type 64 for little money, but they only come in one size, which feels like a Russian size 3.

I have a problem. I was wearing a GP-5 gas mask while watching the video. As soon as I heard the word “AZBESTOS” I immediately took it off. After that, I experienced a strong burning sensation in my chest that lasted for about a minute.

They look good as a military surplus novelty and I would get one just for that one alone but if I wanted an actual gas mask for protection against chemical weapons I would buy one of those Israeli gas masks or keep an eye out for surplus M15 or M40 gas masks or just keep an eye out for any new European or American gas masks.

I collect military Gear mainly Older stuff including gas masks Recently bought a Gp-5 off Amazon Made the Asbestos filter safe by Cutting out some Flexible filters putting it in-between The Respirator and filter

if you buy a gas mask that has had a asbestos filter on it and probaly someone has already breathed through it, is it contaminated or can you just replace the filter?

The only unfortunate thing is if you don't keep it in a moist environment, then it'll break via ripping on the rubber.

When i got my gp-5, i didn't know that the filter had asbestos, and yeah, i used it like 5 times. Soo i think that i will have lung cancer.

So, if I have a old GP-5 mask that has most likely been used with a original asbestos filter, is it safe now with the filter removed? I want it for cosplay and intend to craft a copycat filter for the mask that won't actually work.

I just wanted to know if it's safe to use after it's been used with the old filter and if not, what I need to do to make it safe.

I personally have one, so i came here to say its only dangerous if you have a number 5 filter, as it is the only one that has asbestos in it
