Показать описание
Ecuador has enforced a 60-day state of emergency after its “most-wanted” criminal disappeared from prison.
A manhunt is underway for gang kingpin Adolfo Macias Villamar, who vanished from a maximum-security wing over the weekend while serving a 34-year sentence for organised crime, drug trafficking and murder.
Soldiers have been mobilised on the streets and in prisons, while a nightly curfew has been brought in from 11pm to 5am. Ecuadorians’ right of assembly has also been suspended.
Macias, 44, is the leader of the feared Los Choneros gang, which is thought to have been behind a string of deadly riots inside Ecuador’s overcrowded prisons in recent months.
Los Choneros has been accused of controlling the country’s major jails – including La Regional, where Macias was being held.
One of Ecuador’s oldest gangs, it largely engages in drug trafficking and extortion, and is believed to have forged links with Mexico's Sinaloa cartel.
Macias, who goes by the alias “Fito”, was found to be missing by police conducting an inspection of his prison in the port city of Guayaquil on Sunday.
