The upcoming local elections in May are crucial for both the Labour and Conservative parties, with a lot at stake for each side.

For Labour, the elections are an opportunity to show that they are making real progress under Sir Keir Starmer's leadership and to prove that they are the main beneficiary of lost Tory votes.

Part of Sir Keir's plan for success is trying to prove to the public that Labour has changed under his leadership, and his decision to bar Jeremy Corbyn from standing as an MP in the next general election is a clear signal of this.

To all those in the comments who are pining after Corbyn: yes, it would be wonderful if we could have a left-wing, forward-focused leader. But the world doesn't work that way, and it's not going to happen this time around. While Starmer is no left-wing darling, by anyone's definition, we must concede that he is putting forward a better policy platform than the Tories. Because, at the end of the day, that's the choice: Labour or Tories. It would be great if it didn't work that way but that is how it is. Even if it's two steps forward, one step back, that is *still* one step forward.

If we just whinge and cry about how we didn't get all the things we wanted, then we don't deserve to win.
