For the XXXI Olympiad, the Games have headed into a new world and — literally — a new continent, as the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro hosted the first Summer Olympics to have ever staged in South America. Held from 5 to 21 August 2016, the Rio Olympics have provided the best possible environment for peak performances; athletes had enjoyed world-class facilities, including a superb village, all located in one of the world’s most beautiful cities, in a compact layout for maximum convenience.
Rio was awarded the event in October 2009 during the IOC Session at Copenhagen, Denmark, but the buildup to the 2016 Games was beset by more issues than any other recent Olympiad, ranging from massive cost overruns and the city's crime rate to the construction of venues that ran far behind schedule and an outbreak of the Zika virus that prompted the withdrawals of a number of prominent athletes.
Despite all of these troubles, the Games started on time and there were few significant problems over the course of the two weeks. More than 11,000 athletes from 205 nations took part in the Rio Olympiad, which includes first-time entrants Kosovo, South Sudan, and an independent delegation of refugee athletes, in which the IOC had picked five to ten refugees to compete in the Games, in the context of the "worldwide refugee crisis", of which the then-ongoing European migrant crisis is a prominent part.
Featuring 306 medal events across 28 sports and 42 disciplines, the Games have sought the return of golf to the Olympic programme for the first time since the St. Louis Olympics in 1904, as well as the debut of rugby sevens, though its 15-player counterpart (rugby union) had last played at the 1924 Paris Games.
These 2016 Games were held in a place packed with sea, sand, and samba, and perhaps, the Rio Olympiad were itself a celebration and marriage between sport and the Carnival, thanks to the city’s stunning setting and a desire to lift event presentation to new heights. Yet in the end, it was the Americans that have come out on the top the medal standings, winning 121 medals of any color while equaling their amount of 46 golds that have won at London four years prior. Great Britain had managed to finish second behind the US with 67 (27 golds, 23 silvers, 17 bronzes), and they had become only the second nation in modern Olympic history to increase its haul of medals in the Olympiad immediately after playing hosts at London.
