Mercedes-Benz E-Class W212 driving in extreme cold conditions – how does it handle?

This is a 2010 model with the E350 OM642 engine and 250,000 kilometers on the clock. These temperatures are quite normal here during the winter; some days it can drop as low as -40°C, though that’s not too common.

Overall, this car performs extremely well and remains reliable in such cold conditions. After years of driving Mercedes diesels here, I’ve noticed that while the car handles the cold impressively, there are still some effects, like stiffer steering, a firmer suspension, and a generally harsher ride in extreme temperatures. However, this is something that applies to most cars in such conditions.

To quicker defrost the windscreen put the fan/air conditioner into defrosting mode and lower both sun visors- it will help to direct/lock the warmer air around the windshield

The ride and the steering smooth out once everything warms up. The oil in the shocks is so thick from the cold it rides stuff till it warms up inside. Same goes for steering system

My parent had s213 and the interior was great especially the ambient lighting but I prefer to w212

Nokian Hakkapeliitta with studs is the only way to go around here for the safest winter driving! This one’s running the older Hakkapeliitta 7, but they still grip like a champ.

P.S. Nokian, if you’re reading this… I wouldn’t mind testing out the newer ones! 😂
