You DO have an equal opportunity to TRY to become a basketball player, or even an astronaut. However, not everyone is tall enough, fast enough, strong enough, or smart enough to be a competent basketball player or astronaut...let alone one that is exemplary.

Now some people will argue that class has a role to play in this. I disagree. Just because you cannot afford to go to an ivy league school, doesn't mean that you can't learn the same information being taught there. In this day and age, we have access to information and programs, right at our fingertips...the internet...libraries...and a myriad of other programs. What you learn is important...where you learn it is not.

Perhaps it would be better to phrase equality of opportunity as an equal opportunity to compete. It really doesn't matter what race or gender you are. You can try to compete for any specific job or career, but if you can't meet the minimum competency required for that job or career, then how could you possibly compete with those who are exemplary at it?

Dr. Williams is correct, when he states that the only true equality we should see is in the judicial system. But somehow it does not seem to turn out that way. Wealth, politics, and power have a lot to do with the corruption within our legal system...and it needs to be changed.
