The big success of chess is tied to four key things I believe: 1) It got "clarity" - most players can check if the opponent's next move does not capture one of your pieces. Also the number of pieces feels "limited" (makes the game less "overwhelming"), 2) The game looks visually really cool, 3) The great depth and, 4) Matches can end in a draw - I believe this is a human psychology thing... it works well. The game Fromage also got a decent amount of clarity, yes? And it looks nice on the table.
