10 Winter Fashion Trends To Avoid | What Not To Wear 2020
If you want to stay ahead of the curve and avoid any costly fashion mistakes then this video is for you. Of course these types of videos are always very polarising because there's no one size fits all when it comes to fashion. But these are the 2020 winter fashion trends that I think are either tricky to wear or simply won't be sticking around long enough to warrant the investment.

Anyway, I really hope you enjoy this video and please let me know if there are any winter fashion trends that you won't be wearing either. Thanks for watching and stay safe.

Designers are going to the opposite extreme exactly because it is the opposite of what we already have. They will convince us that our wardrobe is outdated and we need to buy all new things. Then, once we have filled our closets with oversized things, they will tell us how unflattering it is and change it all again. That’s how the business works.

I have to disagree with you on the chunky boots trend—I’ve been seeing those style of boots of years now and I think they’re just getting more and more popular.

I agree with you, all these "trends" are so unflattering. Whats the point to be "trendy" if it only takes away from you?!

I do like shoulder pads but not exaggerated like the 80's, been there done it. Belted blazers are fine but you need to be thin to pull it off and look stylish the same for the quilted items. I did buy a black quilted skirt and bomber jacket that looks smashing. I don't have any hips or bum so it looks good on me as it gives the illusion of a more curvy figure. But you once again nailed it Leonie!! Keep it coming😊

Fashion is largely influenced by culture, either contemporary or historical or both. You have to understand that in order to interpret fashion. Personally I love the pants tucked in boots look. A great way to disguise bigger hips, but is a cultural reference to the Russian cossack dress. When you understand and see these things you can enjoy a richer experience of your clothing. The 80's (and 90s) looks are back so broad power shoulders are in which themselves were influenced by military 'power' looks. As with any fashion trend you like it is about finding a version of it that you like/suits you..if you decide to invest in it. I.e. there are varying degrees of the shoulder pad look and it is particularly great for people with narrow or rounder shoulders, or large hips or if you're overweight as can help balance proportion. Belted jackets is also a military reference but agree (to look super pulled together and holster your pistol - so there'sa utilitarian aspectt it (which was taken further last season when mini belt bags were a trend), but agree it depends on the jacket cut and your size. Ultimately the idea is to find trends that suit and work hard for you and have some longevity as we should not be buying into every trend just for fun. It is ok sit back and admire from the sidelines. Agree on the patchwork though..it references the arts and crafts movement which I think was in the 50s 60s (which was about elevating artisanal skills) but it tends to just make you look poor/scruffy 😅

1. Pants into boots - I have not seen a lot of this. It might be practical in cold weather but it does look a bit swashbuckling and theatrical. But I love skinny jeans or leggings with boots.
2. Extreme Shoulder pads - totally agree, don’t like the extremely overly sized ones, but there are plenty of less extreme ones that work.
3. Large houndstooth - I think it depends on the size and the garment.
4. Chunky boots - I like a lug sole, but don’t love the really exaggerated ones
5. Patchwork - Maybe it works for a real boho style, but it would have to be a more subtle interpretation for me to add a patchwork piece to my wardrobe.
6. Quilting - I don’t mind quilted coats or jackets if they are cut in a flattering way. I wouldn’t give up on the whole category just because some are not flattering.
7. Statement collars - I don’t like some of the oversized ones that look like they don’t belong on the garment, like they were just tacked on. But if done well, a large collar can be very attractive.
8. Belted jackets - Agree, it‘s a tricky look to pull off unless you are a skinny hourglass shape.
9. Logos - not sure how I feel about this. I think, again, it’s the exaggerated ones that are the worst offenders.
10. Knitted vests - the ones you showed weren’t terribly attractive, but I love vests in general, such a great layering piece. And knitted vests are not only practical but can be super flattering when matched to your bottom color, giving you a nice vertical line. And they add a bit of warmth with bulk in the arms. I think they are a classic wardrobe staple, and I’m glad to see them on trend right now.

I think what would be really interesting is if you tried to find versions of each of these trends that are attractive. They may not be for everyone, but I bet there is an elegant style aesthetic that could pull off each of these trends... if maybe in a more subtle version.

Hi Leonie, love your videos. The only reason designers are pushing huge shoulder pads is to make us feel that our clothes without them are outdated, so that we’ll buy more. Having worn them, mostly unwillingly, throughout the 80s, I won’t wear any hut the smallest this time around.

I absolutely LOVE knitted vests with distressed denim and maybe a cowboy boot. Then again I love to mix preppy items with my wardrobe. I guess it's a subjective thing. Also our winters are VERY cold here so having a choice of layering items is key to feeling creative. I do think think climate has a lot to do with fashion choices. Thanks for sharing your thoughts ☺️

I bought a jardigan in a giant houndstooth print more than a year ago, and a light coat with a statement collar. Love them and will continue to wear them. Here in Canada we've always worn quilted parkas in the winter so to us it's not a trend, it's a practical way to keep warm at -20 Celsius. When it's snowy and slushy we tuck our pants into our boots to protect them from getting wet, and don't worry too much about whether it's the latest style. Good to know that our strategies for coping with winter weather are so fashion forward 😁. I totally agree about the giant shoulder pads and vests...ugh.

I loved knitted vests, for me it's a great piece to layer, I personally will incorporate this trend in my autumn/winter wardrobe. I don't see myself including any of the other trends though.

Stop apologizing for your professional advice. You’re the fashion expert and that’s why we view these vids. You’re not forbidding someone from doing what they like

I agree with most of these. However, the houndtooth print has been around for decades in various sizes, the track sole boots are very useful for countries with terrible winters. I have a pair with apretty bow that I wear on snowy/ icy days and they look very cute. The statement collars are amazing if paired with subdued outfits and I will always love them.

I always love to see a new Leonie video waiting for me! ❤️ I agree with everything except the quilted coats/jackets and the vests. I live in a cold climate and wool coats don’t work most days, because of the wind and snow. Also because of our climate, I *love* vests of all types! They add another layer of warmth to my core —the most important area to keep warm— without creating extra bulk at the shoulders and sleeves when adding a coat or jacket over top. They aren’t all preppy; I have a black one in a substantial knit, with a chunky turtleneck and open sides that secure with 2 ties. It gives a lot of interesting styling possibilities, including wearing a contrasting color, a print, or something sheer underneath that peeks out at the sides.

Extremes always make a statement - but not always in a good way. At 5'1 I must pay attention to oversized or exaggerated trends. Thank you for this.

Now a video on trends... I commented that the video in things you didn't like were items not trends. This one definitely is about trends and I appreciate the video as I love a practical wearable outfit. Thankx love it.

I have seen the giant houndstooth in Denmark for 3 years now... I don't think thats its going away soon.. I rarely see the small print, if any at all..And the knitted vests? They are freaking amazing!!!! If you take a plain one, its possible to style in MANY ways!!! They have been a huge hits for years in Korea - And man.... Koreans know how to style
