Interesting video. I am living in HK and use both trains to guangzhou frequently. I would like to add that they serve very different clientele : the old train gets into Guangzhou East station which is in the heart of the business district so it’s perfect for those going to guangzhou, on the other hand the high speed train gets into guangzhou south Station which now serves as a major high speed hub into practically every corner of China. Given the very frequent delays in air travel it’s really a fantastic and oftentimes better alternative to air travel. Trains in China are punctual clean and super fast . I see great potential in this and let’s not forget the tail winds that come from further integration of the pearl river delta since the mega bridge was built and opened last year and of course the long term connectivity in Chinas Road and Belt initiative. Sven as a subscriber to your platform i would welcome a report on this. One thing I don’t understand is : why is this stock not offered on the HKSE, SZSE or SHSE?

Sven, does the thesis still hold? This took a beating during COVID outbreak.

Hi Sven. Thanks for the great video. Sounds like in addition to the fare hike, significant value is from the unlocking of real estate potentials, but do you or Yaokai know the type of properties? I would assume that land along the railway is valued quite differently from land along highway, probably much lower?

Looks like a sound long term investment.
Possible risks?
- Management do not represent the interests of the shareholders (gazprom style)
- Chinese government becomes protectionistic and decides not to respect the shares of foreign ADR investors.
- Chinese currency inflation.
- Chinese governments interferes with land ownership (socialisatioin of GSH's land in key areas)

Dear Sven, when we assess the markets, should we take into account both CAPE ratio and expected GDP Growth?

I don't understand it very well. For instance, if we have Russia which seems to be highly undervalued, is it a good investment or because Russia does not have a good expected GDP growth (only 1%-2%) in the next years, it's better to avoid it?

I'm now asking market wise, not based on individual companies. I want to understand the bigger picture. Can you explain me in a few words?

Sven, it appears, based on yahoo finance, that HK ans SH listied share differ in value (marketcap, div%, pe etc). Is this correct? If so, do you know why?

1999, one year after the massaker, I was in Bejing on Tiananmen Square. China looked for me not very open minded. But when I worked in SE Asia I noticed that the Chinese are very good business people. During that time I thought, if they open to the western life style they will be a mighty economic power on earth. And it happende in a quite short time. That is really interesting. Similar with the Koreans. When I worked there I visited a historical museum. There I saw how they lived in the last centuries. And until mid of 20th century they lived the same life style! And then it changed rapidly... within 25 to 30 years they got very well developed! Exponentially times!

The GSH stock is VERY volatile... the Chinese like to gamble ;-)
The bottom lies somewhere in the $15 range. There is also an H-Stock listed... 0, 30 EUR per share. But trading volume on European stock exchanges is too low!

I'm looking into emerging market stocks because of your latest videos, and that took me back to this one. How is this company looking now? I see the price has gone down significantly, the earnings are down too but I presume that is due the pandemic. Do you have any updates about this company, whether there may be other things going on that are causing problems, or if what is said in this video still applies? I was looking for information on CRWOF and stumbled upon this now too. Feels very difficult to find good information and news updates about these "boring" Chinese value companies, so I have been struggling.

Thanks!

Very interesting! Reminds me Peter Lynch's book on hidden asset plays:

'But real estate plays like that are all
over the place; railroads are probably the best examples. Not only do Burlington
Northern, Union Pacific, and Santa Fe Southern Pacific own vast amounts of
land, as I mentioned before, but it’s all carried on the books at a cost of next to
nothing.
Santa Fe Southern Pacific is California’s largest private landowner, with 1.3
million of the state’s 100 million acres. Nationwide, it owns three million acres
in fourteen states, an area four times the size of the state of Rhode Island.
Another example is CSX, a southeastern railroad. In 1988, CSX sold an 80-mile
right-of-way to the state of Florida. The land had a book value of almost zero,
and the track was valued at $11 million. In the deal, CSX retained off-peak use
of the track—so revenues were unaffected (freight ships during off-peak hours)
—and the sale brought in $264 million after taxes. Talk about having your cake
and eating it too!'

Nice video, thanks for this recomendation. Perhaps another interesting stock you might have a look on is Gatling Exploration (CVE: GTR
).

How do you think about the stock right now? My personal take on it is that, if COVID is “over”, the stock will turnaround dramatically. 200% at least because of the current PB ratio of 0.3… a PB ratio of 1 is fair after Graham and Buffett.

Hey! I was looking at this stock this morning. I bet you like it now. It's around $8 a share.
