Linus has fallen back in love with 3D. So we set a home theater up worthy of being in a theater. Using 2 Projectors, 2 polarizing filters, and JANK we watched Avatar 2 in glorious 3D!

Purchases made through some store links may provide some compensation to Linus Media Group.

Linus makes a video upgrading his basement theater once a month which makes me wonder does he actually watch movies in it or is it constantly under shooting process for upgrades or changes.

Dad, can we please go watch Avatar? - No, we gonna make video from that, and will film it for 2 years.

Shooting of avatar 2 started in 2017 and lasted three years. So still faster.

Last week while reviewing the Nexigo Trivision Ultra Linus sarcastically said: "Seriously, it supports 3d, hilarious. For all of ya'll that are out there with your 3d projection setups". This week Linus builds a janky 3D projection setup.

My old Philips 3D TV has an option for "2 player Gaming". It uses the 3d technology to make split screen fullscreen, so when using special 3D glasses that had both lenses polarized the same way, you could both have your own screen. This setup seems perfect for that! Couch game nights, each person having their own projector screen!

As someone who has worked in projection for quite some time now, the vast majority of movie theaters don't use dual projector setups to screen 3D content, they actually use a single projector with a polarizing screen placed in front of the lens.

This is done for a number of reasons, primarily cost, but it also comes with a heap of downsides including severe brightness reduction and also flattening of the colours.

3D fell out of fashion both because it was somewhat gimmicky, outside of standout titles like Avatar, most films used it poorly (looking at you bad Marvel 3D conversions). It also fell out of fashion due to the lack of consumer interest. Whilst the audience might not be able to immediately notice and describe the downsides, they knew that it wasn't as visually impressive as they remembered (due to the colour and brightness constraints).

Dual projector setups are almost always superior for projecting 3D content. It's a shame that they fell out of fashion. This DIY equivalent is awesome and it's nice to see a little more interest in projection!

Greatest stereo 3D gaming setup of all time? 480Hz projection exists. Could you imagine dual projection with 480Hz for each eye? Even 240Hz would be unreal and is not something that VR headsets can currently accomplish, and VR is not a shared experience.

I’m so pumped that you’re pumped about this. I’m also going down this exact same rabbit hole! The projectors I’m personally using were $90k new 10 years ago and they’re capable of 12k lumens each.

I’m the Chief Engineer at Keith Yates Design and we design private cinemas. Some of our projects have projectors that are the state of the art and cost upwards of USD $300k. The stereo 3D I’ve experienced on projects is just one of those things where it’s literally impossible to communicate how much better it is than the 3D experience at your local cineplex. That’s one of the primary reasons I’m building my own dual projection rig, to share the experience with my friends and family, but to also get more people in the industry exposed to how amazing it can be.

I cannot overemphasize enough how brightness contributes to the 3D effect and total experience, but I think you get that… but it’s also something to be experienced and we need to get you in front some of the tech that is available.

I think you’ve got one of the absolute best starting configurations for your setup with quality polarizing filters, glasses, and screen. The projectors can always be upgraded.

There’s so much more that can be discussed…

16:02 Dear LTT team note for the future: You can use cross-eyed stereography to display something like that, its very simple and easy, all you need is 2 cams.

TRON Legacy 3D and at Home!!!!
That’s my DREAM LINUS. Thanks for making this video. But it’s not easy to make it possible. Oh my… i can’t believe

To maintain polarization you need a metal surface. Light is reflected on its surface in a similar way to a mirror and does not scatter the incident light.
thus the polarization is maintained

Its crazy that back in 2010-2015 you couldn't find aa TV without 3d. Now it's almost impossible

For 3D gaming PC is definitely the ultimate setup. The Dolphin Emulator (Gamecube & Wii) & Citra emulator (3DS) has a built in 3D feature. With the Geo 11 mods for emulators you can play PS1, PS2 & Dreamcast games in 3D. For PC games theirs multiple different ways of playing in 3D (Geo 11, Reshade, Vorpx, UEVR).

If Linus' kids would like some popcorn for that movie, they would have to wait till Linus plants and harvest his own fields and builds a microwave with his sponsors.
