Julia Hartley-Brewer reacts to a cyber attack on a database containing details of armed forces personnel amid reports China was behind the hack.

A third-party payroll system has been hacked, potentially compromising the bank details of all serving personnel and some veterans. A very small number of addresses may also have been accessed.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) took immediate action when it discovered the breach, taking the external network – operated by a contractor – offline.

Julia says: "I assumed this is the kind of thing China does anyway".

The contractor has had this contract since 2020 and they have been hacked already, what a joke. Payroll used to hosted in an MOD datacentre in a secure area on a dedicated air gapped network. Why did they contract this service out introducing vlunerabilities.

I expect a resignation or sacking soon.

But dont worry the MOD has purchased some equifax licenses so SP can see if there identities been stolen. No say on informing individuals affected with thr exact nature of each breach. Yet again the MOD is not fulfilling its own polices around GDPR and DPA18
