Thank you so much for this! I am taking a photography class this semester and am using my grandpa's Nikon d50, with no idea of what I am doing. This video was SO helpful, especially know now there is a button to switch my ISO. Thank you!!!

Thank you for covering this as this is my first ever camera I’ve owned and it was bought off photographer from my mother and given to me although I’m struggling to find the rear end lends since some parts were missing I’m also still learning and this has helped a lot. I wish I would’ve found your video sooner so thank you for all the wisdom you passing in to some of us new guys.

I bought the D50 when it first came out. It was a seamless transition from the N80 film camera that I had prior to this one (virtually identical camera controls, functions, etc.). It has been the only camera I have used since. I love it. Does everything I need it to do. I got away from photography (I'm just a hobbyist) when work got too busy and I loaned my camera and lenses to my daughter for college. Now that I'm retired I am reclaiming my good old D50 to get back into it. But since the DSLRs are going by the wayside I'm contemplating buying a D5600 while I still can, which should keep me in good shape for the rest of my life.

I had been using Nikons (film) since my early teens. This D50 was my first ever Nikon digital.
I don't remember the lens it came with, but I do remember paying a bunch of money fo it.
I migrated to the new Z system about two years ago.
Thanks for posting your video.

I retired as a professional film photographer in 1998. I shot freelance and worked for a news as a staff photographer when I retired. I used everything from 35mm to large format Speed Graflex and developed all my film and made all prints, color, b&w glossy and sepia toned, as well as brown tone archival paper. I have a degree in Fine Arts and a Professional Emphasis in photography. Over the years I have done almost all types of photography and developed very unique darkroom skills. However after I retired my building my darkroom was in was destroyed by a storm and I have never even held a digital camera until now. I was given a Nikon D50 and I know nothing about it. When I retired my workhorse cameras were Nikon F4s. and earlier a 1980 Lake Placid Olympic model First model Cannon F-1 with the MF motor drive. I always used manual settings and manual focus even with the Nikon F4s that had a shutter speed up 8000. I still have most of my 35mm camera's and lenses including my 300, & 400 2.8 lenses and 600 5.6 lens. I have been using them on the D50 with a hand held Gossen light meter because they are manual focus and will not activate the aperture of the camera. I opened the aperture on the camera all the way and control it on the lens. This is not idea, but I can decide whether I want to invest in better digital, or stay retired. For me personally digital photography will never take the place of a manual camera with a manual lens and the human brain to solve problems and make decisions.

I highly recommend using the built in flash but set "slow" synched and with the flash compensation -0.3 to -1.0. it does an amazing job popping in a little fill and texture.

Stupid question but i got this camera from my dads stuff, he passed away a few years ago, in his bag he had a charger with the camera but i dont know if it actually goes with it as i cant find anywhere it would plug in. Does the battery go on a separate charger maybe, or do i just buy a new battery when dead?

Awesome guide. I just picked up one of these for fun off KEH for $11 "bargain" price and it's in great shape. I got lucky in that it takes the same battery as the D700 which is my current workhorse. Just wanted a fun "older" camera to mess around with and it's surprising how simple the functions are with this thing. Can't wait to shoot with it.

What size SD card is allowed for the Nikon D50?

Nice video and I'm sure a great camera. (P)rogram Mode is a pretty cool mode for those that want to control either the shutter or aperture and let the camera figure out the other. It's a pretty cool setting if conditions are changing and you don't want control on (S)hutter Priority or (A)perture priority but both at a moment's notice. That is, if you adjust the shutter speed, the camera will adjust the aperture. If you adjust the aperture, the camera will adjust the shutter speed. Best to read the manual and actually play with it, as it does dive into ISO, WB, etc., but to the most point, think of it as manual mode except for the shutter/aperture combo.

Thank you for this video! I am considering purchasing a D50 for my daughter who wants to get into photography. The one I am looking at is on an auction site and is listed as "untested". Are there many known problems? If the price is low, is it worth the risk?

Hi! Thanks for the tutorial!
I have this camera and, as a beginner, I'd like to know if a lens is compatible with the camera, and if you have any lens recomendatios that'd be highly apreciated!

(Sorry if there are typos, english is my second language)
