It's crazy to think that at one point PTSD was considered to be battle field cowardice. I hope that one day veterans will be treated with love, compassion and patience as they should.

These guys were beyond modern terms of PTSD, there were men who were literally paralyzed and blinded with fear, men who would hear the word "bomb" and run underneath tables and wouldnt come out for hours. Men would see enemy helmets and start crying, men who would never stop crying. They would lose their balance completely and some would never get it back, and the understanding at the time was that this was cowardice and treason and resulted in execution.

My grandfather had this from the Second World War it was terrible. I can’t even imagine what those poor guys went through.

When I was a kid I met a man who worked at a gas station who was shell shocked from WW1. He was protected by all the other men around him as they had to explain his crazy behavior to customers. I can't imagine looking hell in the face as he did during the war.

This made me sad when I looked back at my grandpa's fear of New Year's celebration and independence day.

Some people were even court marshalled for suspected cowardice and then shot. We ought to be thankful for what peace we have

There was a french tactic that there would be spies near the german trenches and would report that new recruits had arrived to the front and at night they would fire an artillery barrage to scare the crap out of the new soldiers who hadnt seen war yet and would get shell shock (PTSD) and would be executed for desertion or cowardice

That’s why I love slaughter house 5. How Kurt Vonnegut writes about PTSD at a time when no one fully understand and actually shines a light on it in a way that even someone who’s never saw the horrors of war could understand.

This honestly proves how needless and detrimental war is. If no one fought this intensely she’ll shock would have never been a thing and ptsd could have been discovered at earlier stages and treated. We as humans are NOT meant to see massive amounts of death, especially possibly on the daily. Absolutely disgusting and heartbreaking.

When i was a kid we used to play in the woods. Right before leaving the street in entering the wood, the last house on the street was a man that used to scare the hell out of us. He sat in a rocking chair with this big crazy afro, rough beard, and a blank big eyed stare. Of course we used to run our asses off as soon as we came close to his house. As we got older we learned that he was a shell shocked vet.

Old videos of shell shocked soldiers are sad beyond description.
Lest we forget.

I witnessed my grandfather have flashbacks and hallucinations of Russian gaurds coming to torture him from the gulag. He was a Polish Canadian taken POW while fighting in the Polish underground.

Just like that song from metallica, "Disposable Heroes"
"You will do what I say, when I say, back to the front!"

And as George Carlin put it, if we kept calling it something visceral sounding, like Shell Shock, more soldiers might be getting the help they need

George Carlin's bit on 'euphemisms' is a good one to see on this.
