What is Serum Electrolyte Test?
Serum electrolyte test measures the levels of electrolytes such as Sodium, Potassium and Chloride.
Electrolytes are minerals that are present in our blood and body tissues. These minerals are important for:
- Maintaining fluid PH balance in the body
- Proper functioning of nerves and muscles
Serum electrolyte test is done:
- As preventive health checkup
- To evaluate the cause of kidney disease, heart diseases like irregular heartbeats or arrhythmias and muscular weakness.

Serum electrolyte test is done on a blood sample. A syringe is attached to a fine needle is used to withdraw the blood from a vein of your arm. The blood sample is then sent to lab for tests.
