Lowrance Hook Reveal Review: Watch This Before You Buy

Other videos featuring the Hook Reveal-

The Lowrance Hook Reveal product line is a budget-friendly lineup of fish finders with all the features you need to get started.

It's simple to install and get started and comes in various screen sizes, a 5", 7", and 9". Two models are available the SS which doesn't have sidescan, and the TS, which does have sidescan.

Another excellent feature is the GPS plotter. You can set waypoints, see where you've been, and with Genesis Live it will actively update the contours of the body of water you're on.

FishReveal Technology

The biggest standout feature of these models is the FishReveal technology. This goal is to make it easier to separate fish from structure and vegetation.

If you look at the image above, you’ll see that they’ve combined the 2D sonar fish arches with the downscan sonar not only to show you the fish and the structure; but both in the same image in real-time.

This is a compelling feature for a few different reasons. First, it’ll help you identify ideal fishing locations because you’ll be able to see where the fish are schooling, and you’ll have the bottom imaging to solidify that.

Second, you’ll be able to separate the fish from the structure better because you can see them both simultaneously.

Sonar Types

One of the most important things to understand is the various types of sonar, how they work, and how they’ll impact how you use the fish finder. The three primary types you’ll hear about are:

Downscan
Sidescan
Tripleshot

These variables determine a few different things. It refers to the type of CHIRP sonar used to find fish in the water. A downscan fish finder operates at a frequency (kHz) that allows you to see everything happening beneath the boat.

This helps you to identify structure and vegetation where fish might be hiding.

Sidescan offers high-resolution images of everything happening around your boat on both sides. This is what you’re going to find on the Hook Reveal, and it’s considered an upgrade compared to the downscan that was on the Hook2.

With sidescan, you don’t have t be right on top of the fish to locate them on the display.

You can also use sidescan to identify ideal casting locations along the shoreline.

Tripleshot is the cream of the crop because it offers everything bundled into one. Tripleshot fish finders will give you more range and the flexibility to search for fish wherever you want.

Understanding how these three components work and how they impact the price of your fish finder will be one of the most important factors to consider.

One of my favorite things about Lowrance is that they do an excellent job of providing customers with options. Whether you choose the 5, 7, or 9, you have the choice of adding the splitshot, tripleshot, C-Map, Contour+, and other features to your base model.

This allows you to essentially build your ideal fishfinder with the features you’re looking for while keeping the price within the range you want it.

For example, if you’re not too worried about inland mapping and GPS, but you really want the splitshot transducer, you could do that.

Lowrance also has an HDI feature with 83/200 or 50/200 high definition imaging. This adds extra range to your transducer allowing you to get the maximum output and highest quality image even at high depths.

SolarMAX Display

In addition to offering plenty of screen sizes and customizable options, you also get the great SolarMAX feature to help heighten the quality of your display even more.

Essentially, this is just a backlight that prevents glare in direct sunlight. I think it serves as a nice cherry on the top of what seemingly is a perfect piece of fishing technology.

As per it "Not being a touch screen" I consider that as a Pro not a con. Your not putting greasy finger prints all over it, making it dirty, secondly a touch screen will eventually fail, far earlier than a button will

They come from the factory with the sonar turned off. This is so you do not overheat and possibly burn up your transducer when it is out of water. If you're like me, I sit in the driveway and pre-program my fish finder. You run the risk of overheating and damaging the transducer if sonar is turned on. Keep the sonar turned off when you're not in the water.

Having the sooner stoped is done for a reason. If you are installing the unit on your boat and it runs out of the water. It does weird things to the calibration on the transducer and people may think its broken when they get it into the water.

Thanks for the review! Just picked one up for $430.. I haven't helped but notice that when my reveal 9ts was in sim mode it stuttered just a little bit. I hope that clears up once I get the transducer on, and in the water. Did yours stutter at all while operating?

How did you like the side scan? Were you able to find structure okay?

I'm coming from a Garmin Striker 4 so the 9"in screen shocked me once I got mine.

I just bought my first fish finder. I bought the Hook Reveal 5. Size wise it fits perfect on my Old Town PDL106. Anything finder larger would for sure interfere with pedaling. It took me a little while to get the sonar turned on. That was a but annoying. I have transducer permanently mounted on my kayak. There is a mount on the bottom of mine and it fits perfect like a glove. I have yet to get the GPS to work though. That would be a little cool but seems gimmicky for my use. I think touch screen would be a bad idea. Just seeing how nasty cell phone screens become would be enough for me to not buy a touch screen fish finder. Overall I like my Hook Reveal 5. I need to possibly lay learn more of its features. I basically just use my finder for water depth and structure. I’m not even really sure if I’ve seen fish in it. But I’ve caught a lot of fish since buying it. Nice video. Thanks for posting your review.

I picked my 9inch on sale for 350 of wondering if they aren't phasing these out? I also got a Navionics+ chart for my region which should help with my local lakes.

This is a great fish finder for beginners or intermediate anglers looking to upgrade their unit.

Is the eagle 7 worth the extra money over the reveal 7?
Is there much difference with the side scan details?

I don't think I will ever need the TripleShot, as I don't need sidescan..it is hard to see on a smaller screen anyhow. I purchased my first fish finder today from Amazon. Got the Lowrance Reveal 7 HDI with Contour+ maps for my kayak. The reason I went HDI is I will be fishing some ocean waters and pretty deep lakes, so I can jig for fish more effectively.

Great video, I'm new to the sonar stuff, and wanting to get the same one you have in this video. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but in your kayak, did you connect it straight to the battery? Did you put a fuse in line before battery. I just want to do it correctly and not fry the unit. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you for your time

Dumb question but do yall put your transducer on the front or the back of the boat? Does it matter that much?

I’ve heard the push plugs for power and transducer can be stiff to connect and disconnect from the head unit. For the kayak angler (myself) who needs to disconnect the unit after each trip to clean, then reconnect for the next trip, how user friendly are these plugs? Thanks

When they sent you the finder did you tell them you were going to test it on a kayak or paddleboard??

You should use the Adobe podcast audio fix. This Ai tool will get rid of echo and wind noise and it's free.

Hello I just watched your review on the Lowrance TS. I have one that I run on my pontoon and I have been trying to use the genesis live with a blank SD card to map the lake. So far I haven’t had any luck so I am trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. Can you help?
