Here's what really sticks with me here in 2021. Finrod swore an oath of friendship to the man who saved his life, and then that man's son comes to him decades later and asks for help. The Sons of Feanor are selfish and have personal motivations as they turn the kingdom against their king, allegedly out of pragmatic reasons. Yet Finrod opts to remove his crown because of higher ideals. Friendship. Loyalty. Honor. Keeping one's oath, especially for love.

That kind of pure quality of character hits really hard these days. Younger me rolled his eyes and called it saccharine. God I was naïve.

Huan the hound was the real champion of this story. Defeated Sauron in his prime and his entire army just to protect a lady his master asked him to guard. That's one good dog!

Our of all of Tolkien's cross-raced lovers, it's always men marrying up. Luthien, Arwen, Melian, Idril, etc.
