Webinar: Understanding Workplace Bullying

Bullying and harassment in the workplace can lead to unhappy and unproductive employees. If left unresolved, these types of issues can deteriorate and result in costly and time-consuming outcomes, such as disciplinary action and employment tribunals.

Society has never been more aware of the problem of workplace bullying. Research has shown that six in 10 people have either been the victim of, or witness to, workplace bullying and most organisations have procedures in place to deal with it when it occurs.

But what we seem to have a less clear understanding of is why workplace bullying happens, and that is precisely what this webinar aims to explore. Drawing on his background in psychotherapy and 20 years mediating workplace conflicts, our CEO & Founder, Dr Mike Talbot, will present an in-depth yet accessible 45-minute talk, followed by a Q&A.

You can't change bullies. It is how they feel in control of their lives. It is what makes them feel powerful. It's how they feel good.

Blamimg and shaming doesn't work because they have no shame.

Develop the insight and awareness of workers and managers so they don't become manipulated into helping the bully. Without them, bullies have very little power to act out.

Worker a, had lies spread about her, as well as being intimidated, undermined, and unsupported. Her personal abuser at work tried to further isolate her from a supportive colleague. Meetings were held behind her back etc. Worker a. was simultaneously living with Domestic Violence at home, which aggravated the whole thing. Not only was she constructively dismissed but in addition to that, she was further disempowered and her abuser was enabled by the whole scenario. This was 20 YEARS AGO yet she still gets excruciatingly painful emotional flashbacks. She no longer lives with her wife beater.

It is so destructive to generalise that people with childhood trauma have no empathy and are bullies. I was bullied at work and they excused themselves by using my past and then influenced my psychologist and in turn psychiatrist to believe that it never happened and I was dramatic and imagining things. I was effectively bullied by my support system because I wasn’t believed and basically blamed for being bullied as if I deserved it. I am not saying that I could not have responded better but the reason I was bullied in the workplace had nothing to do with me. My manager was angry they were forced to hire me when they wanted to hire their best friend. There are many responses to trauma and many factors influence how someone develops and whether they develop empathy even with abandonment. My bullies apparently had perfect childhoods and absolutely no trauma so either they’re delusional or they grew up in a magical fairyland where human beings didn’t exist.

I went through workplace bullying. My coworkers went around spreading rumors I was assaulted by a worker that had just came in the yard she came in 2016. I had put up with it since 2009 until 2016 it had gotten so bad to where I could not take it no longer. So I made the decision to leave the job I decided to retire from the job in 2016

Can we raise awareness of how to safeguard staff who exhibit signs that they may be going through Domestic Violence. These are more vulnerable to also become bullied at work ?

I would like to know what "unwanted conduct" means. My "victim" was waiting for me at my workplace and reported me for approaching her. I do not think it is unwanted conduct, but the Tribunal believed her.
