Urban Forestry in California with the LA Kings | One Tree Planted

From reducing urban heat, to increasing access to urban green spaces, to protecting clean air & water and more, trees in cities provide countless benefits for local communities. Unfortunately, urban trees are not distributed equally and many communities need trees now more than ever. One Tree Planted’s Urban Forestry program is working hard to bridge that gap with high-impact urban tree planting projects.

Our new Urban Tree Notes series is our way of bringing you along with us as we travel to cities around the world to get our hands in the dirt and plant urban trees. Increasing tree canopy in under-resourced neighborhoods ensures that everyone has equitable access to the critical ecosystem services and recreational opportunities that trees provide.

Urban Tree Notes: Episode #2 — Planting Urban Trees with the LA Kings finds us in Lynwood, California. Together with the LA Kings, former LA Dodger James Loney, and partner SoCalGas, we planted 14 climate-appropriate and drought tolerant shade trees on a street that previously only had 2 palm trees. These trees will bring much needed shade to this urban neighborhood. We’re thankful to our on the ground partner Tree People, for making this event such a success.

In such a drought prone climate I'd have made sure to dig plenty of water retention crystals into & around the planting holes before watering everything in as well as plenty of mulch around the base of the trees; all to conserve water and ensure a much better long term chance of survival. Maybe they did do this but it wasn't evident from the video. Drought tolerant species or not, treatment at planting time really matters; those specimens were large and would not have been cheap.
