Honorees who have supported Historically Black Colleges & Universities as well as members of Divine Nine:

Albert Augustine Park is named after the African American leader in Sunnyhills neighborhood and worked for Ford Motor Company. 

City of Fremont has 5 key leaders that are African-Americans and First in serving in the city leadership positions and taking Fremont to the next level in 65 years:

HONORING BLACK HISTORY MONTH - OHLONE COLLEGE & HBCUs & DIVINE NINE
 
WHEREAS, the State of California Assembly recognizes that African-Americans have played a significant role in the history of our nation and have made numerous invaluable contributions to all parts of the United States and to California’s economic, cultural, spiritual, business, education, politics, science, medicine, the arts, and more while working tirelessly to promote their culture and history, fight against racism, and advance the cause of civil rights; and
 
WHEREAS, in 1976, Black History Month was formally adopted to honor and affirm the importance of Black History throughout our American experience; and
 
WHEREAS, the 2022 Black History Honorees are co-hosted by California Assemblymember Alex Lee, Teresa Cox, Fremont City Councilmember, and Bob Nunes, Silicon Valley/San Jose NAACP; and
 
WHEREAS, the State of California recognizes Ohlone College provides the high quality educational opportunities with one of the highest graduation and transfer rates. Ohlone College is ranked in the top 5 honors among 112 California Community Colleges. Ohlone College passed a $350 million dollar bond measure for three (3) academic core buildings; and
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Eric Bishop, Ohlone College President is the first President of African descent in 55 years. Teresa Cox was the first African-American elected to Ohlone College Board of Trustees in 43 years. Ohlone College has had the highest number of women and people of color serving in key leadership roles and founded by the Ohlone Indians; and
 
WHEREAS, Ohlone Community College is a member of the 112 California Community Colleges. California Community College students are guaranteed academic transfers to over 100 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (“HBCUs”) located in 20 states and are identified by U.S. Department of Education.
 
WHEREAS, Over 100 years ago, HBCUs were founded to give African American students an option for higher education at a time when many colleges and universities barred their doors to Blacks. Over the years, the HBCUs have been supported by the nine (9) Black fraternities and sororities as known as the Divine Nine including: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity; and
 
WHEREAS, On November 16, 2021, Teresa Cox, the first African American Fremont City Councilmember made the motion to approve the quote of Dr. Coretta Scott King to be placed on the wall of the City of Fremont’s Downtown Center to embrace culture, diversity, equality, and inclusion in our community. Dr. King received her honorary degree from Spelman College, an HBCU, and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Her Quote “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.”; and
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the State of California, hereby proclaims February as Black History Month in California, and invites everyone to recognize this month to celebrate the diversity, equality, and character of our community and highlight the importance of sharing our culture, customs, and traditions with those around us to continue to build a better community for all.
