The Narrows: Texas' Best Kept Secret?

Texas is a beautiful state, and it boasts many natural gems of all shapes and sizes.

Most of them are well known, but you would be surprised to know that some of the most amazing places in this state are an almost ABSOLUTE secret.

One of these hidden gems is known as The Narrows, located near Wimberley, Texas.

The Narrows is a gorge formed by a series of cliffs seventy-five feet high and a quarter mile in length along the Blanco River in southwest Hays County, Texas.

The Narrows got their name from the narrow appearance of the gorge from above.

Springs flow from the cliffs and provide moisture for various species of ferns and watercress growing along the banks.

When the river is flowing heavily, there are significant and beautiful waterfalls and rapids.

Although The Narrows themselves are located on the Blanco River, and are, thus, officially public property, they are almost completely surrounded by private property, which is aggressively patrolled and protected by both landowners and local law enforcement.

The only legal way to reach this beautiful area is a grueling 14.4-mile roundtrip hike and/or swim down the riverbed, depending on the depth of the water at the time.

Hence, this hike is not recommended for anything less than the most avid, prepared, experienced, and physically fit hikers.

But if you’re feeling adventurous, there are several blogs and YouTube videos that cover the hike, and prepare the viewer for what lies ahead.

For the rest of us, there is the drone option (just try not to get your drone shot out of the sky) or YouTube.

Although nothing beats in-person exploration, I do my best to bring the hidden gems of Texas to your living room or mobile device, and I hope that you continue to follow me as I explore the lesser-known, harder-to-access gems in Texas.

Please consider liking my videos and subscribing to my channel if you’ve enjoyed coming along for the ride thus far. It means a lot to me. Thanks, and I’ll see you on the next one!

Dammit, I grew up in TX and had never seen or heard of The Narrows. Doesn't seem right that there isn't better access.

I kind of understand the frustration of land owners along this stretch... but also dammit it hurts when places like this don't have a viable means for managed public access. And even when accessed legally I've had friends who've had guns pulled on them by landowners standing on the banks, it's all fucky.

Hey super helpful thanks! Wondering if you could recommend where to park, staying out of trouble with landowners/law enforcement, how long it took to complete hike (starting and ending wherever you parked) and any other tips/articles that would be helpful?

I live a couple counties away. Landowners don't like strangers and trespassers, garbage and damage. Why not try to contact and introduce oneself with bona fides and seek permission? You may be surprised. I've never been but now want to experience

It didn't used to be so "private" until the Brooklyn tribe move there in the late 60's and early 70's.

Eventually this area will be easier to get to. A wave of population growth is on the way and they will need to build more roads over the river.
