About Greg Noblin

Inspiration and Process

Daydreams and impossible scenarios frequently populate Greg’s mind. When a vivid scene or narrative emerges, he feels compelled to act, capturing source material through photography. As he digitally assembles these images, the visions from his mind take shape on the screen. The connection to his childhood memories of imagination becomes palpable. But an image needs more—it requires a soul.

Greg infuses his works with textures to evoke nostalgia, warmth, and intrigue. These textures breathe life into the pictures, creating a sense of longevity akin to vintage sensibilities. Applying gel medium to finished prints further enhances this connection, making the textures come alive and the stories more real.

Panelism: The Artistic Process

Greg’s unique process, which he calls Panelism, blends the organic and the rigid. He stitches smaller prints together in a grid, forming larger, organic shapes within the image. This juxtaposition of natural forms against a constructivist grid mirrors the overall process of deconstruction and reconstruction.
Deconstruction: Greg photographs all elements for his images, digitally cutting them out. This deconstruction allows him to rearrange the pieces into narratives.

Reconstruction:

The image is divided into even squares and printed on multiple sheets. Physically reassembling these squares reconstructs the entire image.

Themes and Expressions

Greg’s work reflects shared human experiences. While some pieces exude freedom and whimsy, others harbor a subdued, unresolved quality. These images hint at battles, desires for independence, and visual ironies. Each composition captures a common thread of existence.
Multiple Sizes and Editions
As a photographer, Greg grapples with reproducing his work. He produces multiple sizes of each image, but never the same panel size. For instance, an original 36"x48" panel might inspire additional panels at different sizes, such as 30"x30" or 48"x60". He also creates a limited “small batch” edition of 18"x24" panels.

Greg Noblin’s art invites us to explore the intersection of imagination, memory, and the tangible world. Through his lens, we glimpse the extraordinary within the everyday.
