There is nothing controversial about this!!!! We have two very distinct separate and sovereign governments within our federation. Provinces have always had this individual power to operate. The only difference now is Alberta is taking a play out of the Quebec play book and telling Ottawa to butt out of our Provincial jurisdiction and try to control us. It is about time. It is a good thing for all Albertans period. Whatever your color of political stripes are. Alberta first.

Why does Alberta has to spend most of the money for equalization when all it gets in exchange is bad words ? kudos to Danielle for standing up for Albertans, now let's see how Quebec will react, getting free money and instead of being grateful always there to make life more difficult for Alberta.

Seems to be a reoccurring statement in the comments that "Quebec is the precedent for this!" followed by "no it's not"

Here is a list of three of my favorite insane special privileges enjoyed by Quebec:

1) Exemption from the National Energy Programs rules on energy exports. Alberta would love itself a piece of that, and before you cry hydro is clean green energy....well so in Manitoba and they pay the same tariffs to the feds that Alberta does.

2) "The Quebec Abatement" consists of a reduction of 16.5 percentage points of federal personal income tax for all tax filers in Quebec. What does that mean? Well sit down this one will blow your mind. Quebec has an extremely high provincial tax rate, so to offset it the federal tax rate was reduced by 16.5%. In case that seems fair to you think of it this way. The rest of Canada pays the same rate but Quebec instead pays itself more and the feds, in turn, take less.. meaning unlike the rest of Canada Quebec gets to keep its own revenues without having to beg the feds for its own money.

3) This one is my favorite, Immunity to proportional representation. Quebec has several times in the past 60 years successfully maintained a minimum of 25% of the available MP seats and has vowed to defend this despite having a population that's been shrinking for decades. This effectively means that everyone asking the rest of Canadians to respect our elections is also asking us to respect the fact that we will forever be dead-locked in a democracy where Quebec gets a bigger vote share than is ethical.

*Bonus round, federal investment favoritism, carbon tax breaks, disproportionate military base allocation, disproportionate cultural funding, unjustifiable EI guidelines, equalization transfers, federally funded IVF that's not provided to anyone else, ITS OWN FUCKING TAX AGENCY, and the perpetual guillotine of separation being used in every single piece of legislation for the last 50 years.

Keep up the good fight premier Smith. If any albertan votes for the NDP after what their federal leader is allowing trudeau to do to our country, then you are giving trudeau what he wants. Things have to change, anybody with half a brain has to see that.

All good. But you should consider taking care of yours as well. The middle and poor class. We're are the $ going. I'm sure you will still get yours. But I am in agreement for taking care of the environment, and should be done by everyone, .
