Thank God someone said it. Squats are not the king of leg exercises when it comes to maximizing hypertrophy.

It's important to note (imo) that BB squats train the spinal erectors isometrically as well, and most people don't add in intentional erector work. If you don't BB squat, deadlift or hip thrust, make sure to have some spinal erector isolation or your back will end up unevenly developed.

When he talked about the barbell squat not being optimal for muscular growth, I heard Tom Platz fucking scream.

I respectfully disagree with this statement Eugene. For advanced lifters I understand this mentality, but you, just like a lot of other successful lifters who preach this mentality seem to have forgotten that you built your physique off of basic compounds. I don't think I've ever seen or heard of someone who built their physique off of primarily machines, at least not in their early years. From my own experience I found that the stimulus was just not there (I started off with a lot of machine work) and I started making a lot more progress when I switched to free weights. I recently started incorporating machines back into my workout and they feel a lot more effective at muscular failure, but in my opinion I could only properly make use of these movements because I built up a mind-muscle connection and a 'feeling' for how to target the muscles I want to grow. In your case I understand why you would recommend them, but keep in mind that the majority of your audience are beginners and what works for you might not work for them. Cheers.

Systemic Failure vs Targeted Failure. CNS, Connective tissue, Systemic musculature (strength) all form the system behind to crank up the greatest Force to induce the greatest mechanical tension.

I don't think removing squats from training completely to improve hypertrophy is optimal if your main goal is squat strength. I can get behind doing less direct squat work but when cutting out exercises completely I always need 3-4 weeks just to get back to my old strength level before even profiting from the hypertrophy block. I think a heavy single at around 85-90% plus like 1-2 working sets should be enough to keep your proficiency in the movement while you focus on muscle building.

During squats, my lungs fail before my legs.

Whenever I do almost any upper body exercise I have task failure because my shoulders and parts of my arms and back are underdeveloped. Any plank like exercise like mountain climbers, my arms fail before my abs or legs. It’s annoying as fuck.

NEVER take out Squats only if you want to lose muscle.
